On June 15th, at 42 years old, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my left breast: ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) stage zero. A routine mammogram and ultrasound on April 27th flagged a seemingly minor abnormality which resulted in diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds on May 20th. These tests triggered two breast biopsies—an ultrasound-guided core biopsy on June 1st which was benign and a stereotactic mammogram-guided biopsy on June 2nd which ultimately found DCIS. Despite being a massage therapist and healer with almost 19 years of experience and a strong interest in biology, it was humbling to realize how much I did not know.
