Backbends with block support can be very helpful, especially if you practice Ashtanga, surf,where the spine experiences compression from paddling, or spend many hours sitting at a computer. They help create a feeling of space and expansion. 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️
Do backbends with blocks create expansion between vertebrae?
What they do:
Encourage spinal extension
Hydrate and nourish the discs through movement
Reduce muscular guarding
Improve thoracic mobility (which many of us lack)
Decrease compression caused by sitting or stress
The “space” you feel is mostly:
Release of tight fascia
Disc rehydration
Better distribution of extension (instead of jamming into L4-L5)

Let’s continue with our sequence to release tension in the middle and upper back and shoulders. This posture targets thoracic spine mobility and helps counteract a rounded upper back and protracted shoulders. Maintain the position for 10 to 20 steady breaths, emphasizing length through the spine and softening across the shoulder girdle with each exhale. This is particularly beneficial after surfing or prolonged periods of sitting at a computer. Observe sensations carefully and move out of the posture slowly. 🧘‍♂️🙏

I’m starting a simple movement sequence to help you slowly improve spinal mobility and release stiffness — especially in the upper and middle back and the shoulder girdle.
All you need is a wall and a daily commitment 🙏
This is great if you spend long hours at the computer, surf, or do any sport that builds tension in the upper body.
