As a startup with limited resources, what do you focus on: outbound or inbound marketing?

If we could, we would be everywhere, on all social media, speaker at all events, generating quality content all over the internet so that our prospects cannot overlook us.

However, in today’s real world, marketing is expensive. We need numerous paying clients to invest in marketing.

Many of my clients are B2B SaaS companies.

To SaaS startups, I want to say:

Yes, I know, inbound is trendy.

However, don’t neglect outbound.

Why? Your corporate clients might not need quality content on social media to convince their DMU (= decision making unit = all individuals who have a say or influence on the buying process).

An example of perfect market fit? Twitter.

Twitter’s growth rate = 1400% in the 12 months between Feb 2008 and Feb 2009.

How did they make it possible?

The Twitter team encouraged social interaction and link sharing, just like Facebook did.

Among the early adopters were actors and businesspeople on the rise. Twitter gave them the opportunity to communicate with their fans on a more personal tone.

Another driver of growth at Twitter: the constant flow of updates.

Indeed, each time you log in, there is always fresh news on Twitter.

Twitter’s model =
Built-in virality + mobile + ease of use

What is the model most likely to boost your growth?

Groupon: How did Groupon become insanely successful so fast?

- Launched in 2008

- IPO in 2010 (growth rate: 2.2% ; $713M revenue)

- Strategy: users have a financial interest in convincing their contacts to use Groupon. 2 strategies activated: referral system and the Groupon deals that are available only if enough individuals agree to buy the product.

- Customer retention: Groupon sends daily email with offers.

Could these strategies be implemented in your company?

- Then TripAdvisor nurtured the customer engagement so that the number of profitable clicks would increase.

- TripAdvisor raised $4M.

- Then, TripAdvisor encouraged review generation, so that more users post and attract new users.

- 2004: TripAdvisor was bought by Expedia/IAC for $210M.

- 2011: Spin out of Expedia/IAC.

- Following step: marketing towards the instructors showing them that they can increase their revenue thanks to Udemy.

- May 2014: 300% growth rate over 12 months ; $48 M raised.

What comes first: fully develop your product or establish sales channels?
If you chose the sales channels, you’re smarter than many.

Your product will change based on your customers’ feedback.

If you don’t have any recurring customers, you don’t have a business.

Nobody cares how beautiful your product is, if nobody buys it.

Don’t be blindly in love with the product you’ve created.

Your product only exists to fully the needs of your customers.

Be sure to let your customers feel they are at the core of your thoughts.
