Something to ponder if you have Irish roots…

☘️ Research has consistently found elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and alcohol use disorder in both Ireland and the Irish diaspora. Researchers have been trying to explain why for decades. They've come up with three theories and all three may be true at once.

A peer-reviewed study published in Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences found that over 40 percent of Irish adults meet the criteria for at least one mental health disorder in their lifetime, with major depression affecting 12 percent and generalized anxiety disorder affecting 7 percent of the population. These figures are notably high by European standards and they follow the Irish diaspora across generations. Irish Americans have historically shown elevated rates of depression and alcohol use disorder compared to many other ethnic groups in America, a pattern that researchers have been documenting and debating since the mid-20th century.

The first theory is epigenetic. Historian and researcher Dr. Oonagh Walsh has argued that the Great Famine produced measurable epigenetic changes in stress response and mental health systems that have been transmitted across generations. Studies of populations that survived comparable starvation events have found altered cortisol regulation and stress signaling in their descendants. The body, under sufficient threat, updates its instructions to the next generation. The Irish body may still be running those updates.

The second theory is cultural. Irish families have historically not sought help for mental health conditions. The culture of stoicism and silence that helped generations survive occupation, famine, and emigration also created environments where suffering went unnamed and untreated for decades at a time. Depression that isn't treated doesn't disappear. It compounds.

The third theory is simply genetic. The same immune system gene variants that make Irish populations more susceptible to autoimmune conditions may also influence neurological and psychiatric vulnerability. The research here is still developing but the direction of the evidence is consistent.

Three theories. One pattern that researchers keep finding in the same population across generations and continents. If this feels familiar in your family, it has a history that is longer than any one person's life. Follow The Irish Remembered for more. ☘️

How do you manage clinical supervision online?

In busy clinical settings, reflective and ethical practice can easily be compromised under heavy caseloads. Online clinical supervision offers therapists and healthcare professionals a flexible, supportive space to pause, reflect, and navigate complex ethical challenges without adding to their day's demands.

For example, therapists juggling multiple clients have found that scheduled online supervision sessions help them maintain clarity and resilience. One clinical nurse shared how monthly virtual supervision helped her recognise and manage countertransference, improving her client relationships and reducing burnout.

This means that even with a packed schedule, professionals can consistently engage in ethical reflection and professional growth. Online supervision becomes more than just a requirement; it's an essential tool for sustaining quality care.

If you're managing a busy caseload, could integrating online supervision be your key to more mindful, ethical practice?

Have you ever felt truly seen in therapy?

Exploring your identity or relationships can be a complex path. Affirming therapy matters because it offers a safe, supportive space where you are accepted exactly as you are, without judgement.

Many clients share how affirming therapy helped them navigate feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt. For example, a young adult questioning their gender identity found that being heard and validated reduced their anxiety and empowered them to build stronger connections with loved ones.

This kind of therapy recognises and honours your unique life, fostering self-acceptance and resilience. It's not just about talking; it's about feeling understood on a deep level.

If you're exploring who you are or how you relate to others, affirming therapy can be a powerful support. What might change for you if you felt fully affirmed in your own path?

Online support can break down barriers to therapy without ever compromising the quality of care you receive.

Many people hesitate to seek help due to logistics, stigma, or time constraints. Online therapy offers a way to connect with a qualified professional from the comfort and privacy of your own space.

For example, clients from Ireland, the UK, Spain, and beyond have found that video, audio, or chat sessions fit easily into their busy lives while still providing a safe, confidential environment to explore their challenges. This accessibility means emotional support is just a click away, no matter where you are.

What this means for you is simple: you don't have to sacrifice care for convenience. Online therapy can be just as effective, with the added benefit of flexibility and reduced stress about travel or scheduling.

If you've been waiting for a sign to prioritise your mental health, this is it. Ready to work with a therapist where you are? Reach out today and take the first step towards feeling better.
