Your health is more than the absence of illness. 🌿

Wellbeing covers how you feel physically, mentally and emotionally - and all three are connected. When one area is struggling, the others often feel it too.

It’s easy to put your own health to the bottom of the list, especially when life is busy. But small, consistent habits make a real difference over time. Regular movement, enough sleep, eating well, staying connected to people you care about and taking time to slow down are all things that support your overall health in ways that are easy to underestimate.

If something hasn’t felt right lately - physically or emotionally - it’s worth paying attention to that. You don’t need to have a specific complaint to speak to your GP. A general check in is always worthwhile.

Your health is worth prioritising. Our team is here when you need us.

Sunny days are upon us, and with more time spent outdoors, it’s worth making sun protection part of your daily routine. ☀️

UV rays can cause skin damage even on cloudy days, so consistent protection matters whatever the weather.

A few simple habits make a real difference:
☀️ Apply SPF 30 or higher every day, even when it’s overcast. UV rays don’t disappear behind clouds.
☀️Reapply every two hours when spending time outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
☀️ Cover up during peak UV hours - typically between 11am and 3pm when the sun is strongest.
☀️ Don’t forget areas that are easy to miss - the back of the neck, ears, tops of feet and hands.
☀️ Check the UV index before you head out. When it’s 3 or above, sun protection is recommended - and in Ireland this can occur from May through to September.

If you notice any new or changing moles or skin changes this summer, don’t leave it, speak to your GP.

Perimenopause doesn’t look the same for everyone.

One of the most common misconceptions we come across is that if your periods are still regular, you can’t be perimenopausal. This simply isn’t true.

Perimenopause can begin long before your cycle changes and many women experience significant symptoms while their periods remain completely normal.

Disrupted sleep, mood shifts, brain fog, joint pain, low energy and hot flushes can all be signs. But not all of them need to be present, and they don’t need to be severe to be worth taking seriously.

Your GP can help make sense of what’s going on and talk through your options - whether that’s lifestyle support, further tests, or HRT.

Let’s bust a few myths about men’s health. 🩺

“I feel fine, so I must be fine.”
Many of the most common conditions affecting men - high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes - have no symptoms at all. Feeling well doesn’t always mean everything is well. Get regular check ups.

“It’ll probably sort itself out.”
Some things do. Many don’t. And the longer something is left, the harder it can be to manage. Early conversations with your GP almost always lead to better outcomes.

“Going to the GP is for when something is seriously wrong.”
Your GP is there for all of it - routine checks, things that have been niggling, questions you’ve been putting off asking. No concern is too small.

“Men don’t really get mental health problems.”
They do. And they’re less likely to talk about it. If you’ve been struggling with stress, low mood or anxiety, a conversation with your GP is a good place to start.

You don’t have to have all the answers before you pick up the phone.

Do you know what to look for when it comes to your skin? ☀️

Most skin changes are harmless, but some are worth getting checked.

When looking at moles or skin changes, dermatologists use the ABCDE guide:
A - Asymmetry: one half doesn’t match the other
B - Border: edges are irregular, ragged or blurred
C - Colour: uneven colour or multiple shades
D - Diameter: larger than 6mm, roughly the size of a pencil eraser
E - Evolving: any change in size, shape, colour or a new symptom like bleeding.

If you notice anything that concerns you, or a mole that has changed, don’t wait and see. Your GP is a good first port of call.

You know your skin better than anyone. Trust your instincts.

When did you last have a health check?

As we get older, staying on top of our health becomes increasingly important - yet many people only visit their GP when something is wrong. Regular health checks can catch issues early, before symptoms develop and when they’re much easier to manage.

If you’re over 65, there are a number of checks worth having regularly including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, kidney function, and thyroid. A medication review is also worth considering if you’re on long term prescriptions, to make sure everything is still working as it should for you.

It’s also a good opportunity to talk about anything that’s been on your mind - sleep, mobility, memory, mood, or anything else that feels different to how it used to.

You don’t need to wait until something feels wrong. A proactive conversation with your GP is one of the most useful things you can do for your long term health and wellbeing.

Could your thyroid be behind how you’re feeling?

Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck, but it has a big job. It produces hormones that regulate your metabolism, energy levels, mood, weight, and much more. When it’s not working as it should, the effects can be wide-ranging and easy to miss.

An underactive thyroid - known as hypothyroidism - is one of the most commonly undiagnosed conditions in general practice. Symptoms can include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight gain, feeling cold all the time, low mood, brain fog, dry skin, and changes to your hair.

Because these symptoms are so varied and develop gradually, many people put them down to stress, age, or just not sleeping well enough. But they’re worth checking.
A simple check can tell you whether your thyroid is functioning as it should - and if it isn’t, it’s very treatable.

If any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth a conversation with your GP.

Many people who are struggling with stress, anxiety, or low mood first notice it in their body- not their mind.

Headaches, digestive issues, a tight chest, constant fatigue, or a immune system that just won’t hold up. These are all ways that mental health can show up physically.

Sleep is often one of the first things affected. Difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night, or feeling completely exhausted no matter how much rest you get can all be signs that something else is going on beneath the surface.

If you’ve been experiencing unexplained physical symptoms or your sleep has been consistently disrupted, it might be worth having a conversation with your GP, not just about the physical symptoms, but about how you’ve been feeling overall.

You might be surprised how connected the two are.

Our team is here to help.

Loneliness isn’t just hard on the heart emotionally, it’s hard on the body too.

Research consistently shows that social isolation can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health in older adults. It has been linked to increased risk of depression, cognitive decline, high blood pressure, and even a weakened immune system.

Yet it’s something that rarely comes up in a GP appointments unprompted. Often because people don’t want to burden others, or don’t see it as a medical concern. It is.

If you’rve been feeling increasingly isolated, or if you’re worried about a parent, neighbour, or family member who seems to be withdrawing - it’s worth a conversation with your GP.

Small connections make a real difference. And so does asking for help.
