πŸŽ— A new randomised clinical trial has confirmed something that integrative oncology has been building toward for years β€” and we think it's worth sharing carefully and honestly.

A study published this month in the journal Cancers enrolled 107 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) β€” cancers of the mouth, throat and larynx β€” who were undergoing radiotherapy. Half received traditional acupuncture plus auricular acupressure alongside their radiotherapy. Half received no additional intervention.

The results showed a striking contrast between the two groups:

β†’ Patients receiving acupuncture improved across ALL five quality of life domains β€” physical, psychological, social, environmental and overall wellbeing β€” during radiotherapy.
β†’ Patients who received no acupuncture deteriorated across these same domains during the same period.
β†’ The intervention was well tolerated with no significant adverse events.

Head and neck cancer treatment is one of the most quality-of-life-impairing experiences in oncology. Radiotherapy in this region affects eating, swallowing, speaking and breathing. Dry mouth, pain, fatigue and severe psychological distress are common. The fact that a non-invasive complementary therapy produced measurable improvements across every domain of wellbeing β€” while the untreated group deteriorated β€” is clinically significant.

This builds on existing evidence: a major phase III trial at MD Anderson Cancer Center previously found that acupuncture significantly reduced radiation-induced dry mouth (xerostomia) β€” one of the most debilitating long-term side effects of head and neck radiotherapy.

At AcuRodos we offer a Cancer Support & Recovery package β€” 8 sessions, €380, with 12-month validity to accommodate treatment schedules. We work alongside your oncology team, not independently of it.

⚠️ Acupuncture is complementary care. It does not treat or cure cancer. Always discuss with your oncologist before beginning any complementary therapy.

πŸ‘‚ New research on acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for tinnitus and hearing loss β€” and the science behind it is fascinating.

Researchers from Hebei University have published the most comprehensive review to date on how acupuncture and classical herbal medicine affect tinnitus and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). The findings were published in Neuropharmacology and Therapy.

Here's what the evidence shows:

⚑ Electroacupuncture at four peri-auricular (around the ear) points β€” TB21, TW17, SI19 and GB2 β€” significantly improves auditory thresholds. It outperforms manual acupuncture alone, particularly in acute sudden hearing loss, producing greater improvements in the speech frequency range and better speech recognition scores.

🌿 A classical Chinese formula called Er Long Zuo Ci Wan was shown to protect cochlear hair cells at the molecular level β€” downregulating a pro-apoptotic pathway (p53/Bak) that causes permanent hearing cell death, and maintaining mitochondrial integrity in these cells. In clinical trials it produced superior auditory outcomes compared to sound therapy alone.

πŸ’€ For tinnitus specifically, acupuncture reduced severity scores on validated scales including the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory β€” and improvements extended to sleep quality and psychological distress, both of which are severely affected by chronic tinnitus.

🌱 Huang Qi (Astragalus) enhanced cochlear microcirculation and improved hearing recovery. Ginkgo biloba reduced noise-induced synaptic loss. Polyphenols in classical preparations reduced cochlear inflammation at the cellular level.

In Chinese medicine, tinnitus and hearing loss are most commonly associated with Kidney Essence deficiency β€” the deep constitutional energy that governs the ears, bones, and reproductive function. This is why the classical formula Er Long Zuo Ci Wan builds on a Kidney-nourishing base. Acupuncture at these specific points restores Qi and Blood flow to the cochlear zone and clears the channel stagnation driving the symptom.

At AcuRodos we offer electroacupuncture and herbal consultations for ear-related conditions. All herbal preparations are discussed and supplied following individual personal assessment only.

⚠️ Acupuncture is complementary care. Always see your GP or ENT consultant first for assessment of any hearing condition.

🌿 A new review looked at 158 clinical trials on complementary therapies for menopause. Here's what the evidence actually says β€” honestly.

Researchers analysed 86 different complementary approaches used in menopause, including acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, vitamins and mind-body therapies. Their conclusion was refreshingly honest: most studies were of low quality, and most treatments didn't show enough evidence to be recommended clinically.

But β€” and this matters β€” some specific treatments did show meaningful results:

⚑ Electroacupuncture improves hot flushes. This is the specific form of acupuncture that passes a gentle current between two needles. This is different from regular acupuncture and the evidence for it is more consistent.

😴 Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine improves sleep quality β€” specifically in perimenopausal women with insomnia. Not standalone acupuncture. The combination.

🌿 Chinese herbal medicine using Rehmannia as the main herb showed improvement in overall menopausal scores across 17 studies, over 2 weeks to 3 months. No adverse events reported.

Why are we sharing a review that says "most complementary therapies don't have enough evidence"?

Because this is exactly how we approach our work at AcuRodos. We don't claim that acupuncture cures menopause. We offer what the evidence supports:

βœ“ Electroacupuncture for hot flushes β€” available at AcuRodos
βœ“ Combined acupuncture and herbal consultations for sleep β€” available at AcuRodos
βœ“ Chinese herbal medicine consultations following individual assessment β€” available at AcuRodos

If you're navigating menopause and want honest, evidence-based support β€” not promises, not supplements to sell β€” come and talk to us.

⚠️ Herbal preparations at AcuRodos are discussed and supplied following individual personal assessment only. Not sold online.

🌿 New research on Chinese herbal medicine and fibromyalgia β€” and the results are significant.

A randomised controlled trial from the Rheumatology Department of Guang'anmen Hospital β€” one of China's leading TCM research centres β€” has confirmed that a traditional 7-herb formula significantly outperformed placebo for fibromyalgia over 12 weeks.

The results:

β†’ Pain (VAS score) reduced significantly at weeks 4, 8 and 12
β†’ 75% of patients in the herbal group reported overall improvement at week 12, vs 33% of placebo
β†’ Sleep quality improved significantly at week 8
β†’ Overall fibromyalgia impact improved at week 12 β€” four weeks after treatment ended
β†’ No serious adverse events

The formula β€” called Roujin, derived from the classical Xiaoyao San β€” contains 7 herbs: Chai Hu, Bai Shao, Bai Zhi, Tu Fu Ling, Yi Yi Ren, Chen Pi and Gan Cao. These herbs address what Chinese medicine calls "liver depression and spleen deficiency" β€” the pattern behind the combination of widespread pain, unrefreshing sleep, fatigue and emotional strain that defines fibromyalgia for so many people.

What makes this research particularly interesting is the pharmacology. The key compound in Bai Shao (paeoniflorin) works at the level of the spinal cord's pain-processing pathways β€” reducing the neuroinflammation that drives central sensitisation. These herbs are not simply masking pain. They appear to address its neurological roots.

At AcuRodos, we combines acupuncture with herbal medicine guidance where appropriate β€” based on individual TCM assessment, not a standard protocol applied to a diagnosis.

Every recommendation follows a full consultation.

⚠️ Herbal preparations at AcuRodos are discussed and supplied following personal clinical assessment only. They are not sold online or advertised for specific conditions.

25/06/2026

🧠 Scientists just found out why chronic pain and anxiety almost always show up together β€” and why one treatment can address both.

A study published this week in the journal Acupuncture Research, by researchers at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, identified a direct neural circuit connecting pain to anxiety in the brain — the DRN→BLA pathway — which carries serotonin signals from the brain's calm centre to its emotional centre.

When chronic pain develops, this circuit goes quiet. Serotonin stops flowing. And when that happens, anxiety follows β€” not as a psychological reaction to pain, but as a direct neurological consequence of the same damage.

This is why up to 60% of people with chronic pain also develop anxiety or depression. They're not separate problems. They share the same broken circuit.

Here's where it gets remarkable: after just 6 sessions of electroacupuncture at two specific points (ST36 and SP6), the serotonin circuit reactivated. Pain thresholds improved. Anxiety behaviours reduced. And when researchers blocked the circuit artificially before treatment β€” the electroacupuncture produced no effect at all. The circuit wasn't just associated with the result. It was the mechanism.

At AcuRodos, we treat chronic pain and anxiety together as a matter of course β€” because in clinical practice, they almost always come as a pair. This research confirms there's a biological reason for that, and a neurological explanation for why electroacupuncture can address both in the same treatment.

⚠️ This was a mouse study. Important foundational science β€” but clinical human trials are the next step. Electroacupuncture is a complementary therapy and does not replace medical care.
