Mum and baby are on day 3 postpartum.

I receive a message: we will be discharged later on today, could you come and visit this evening?

Of course I can, i can’t wait to meet the new addition 😊

Getting ready to work with a new family means getting organized and make sure I am physically and emotionally present for them.

Every family I work with is unique and my focus is 100% on them when I enter them home.

Today I am starting with a repeat client, i accompanied their first postpartum nearly 5 years ago.
So as well as looking after mum and dad and the new baby, I am also thinking about the major transition for the older sibling!

Have a go before you peek at anyone else’s answer!

This is something that many families don’t think about until they’re already in the thick of those first weeks with a newborn.

The clues are all true, but the answer might not be what you expect.

What do you think it is?

Leave your guess in the comments. No cheating!

I’ll reveal the answer in another post next week!

We are all on a learning journey.

None of us know it all. I repeat: none of us know it all!

This is an absolute truth. So, what is one thing you wish you had known before you started on your journey?

If you had a postpartum doula for just one day, what would you ask her to do?

On average I probably work with families for around 6 to 8 weeks. Sometimes it is much longer, sometimes it is the first 10 days.

Every family I support is unique in their dynamic, wishes and needs. It is my job to adapt and provide the best service for them.

So tell me, what would you like a postpartum doula to do for you?

The importance of early bonding on the long-term mental health and resilience of children

"Imagine if the hugs, lullabies and smiles from parents could inoculate babies against heartbreak, adolescent angst and even help them pass their exams decades later. Well, evidence from the new branch of science called epigenetics is reporting that this long-term emotional inoculation might be possible." - wrote parent researchers Robert Winston and Rebecca Chicot on the science of epigentics and parenting.

To be clear, we can't avoid 100% of difficulties or mental health struggles. However, resarch does support that early, strong bonds with primary caregivers increases resiliency and can be protective against *some* mental health challenges.

"A 2012 study by the Essential Parent Company showed that around 80% of new parents felt both anxious and completely unprepared with the practical skills they need to look after their new baby."

Several generations ago, many parents learned to parent from village style and extended family living and support. They knew what to expect with newborns and young infants. There was understanding of infant feeding, postpartum healing, and raising children wasn't done in isolation.

In more recent generations, new parents often have little to no experience with newborns, breastfeeding, bonding with infants, etc., until they have their own children.

So, from a public health perspective, what do we do?

We encourage more prenatal education. Increase social supports and new parent support groups. We raise awareness about the importance of and HOW to bond with infants, even when they're in a difficult stage of frequent feeds and little sleep.

For doulas, lactation professionals, and childbirth educators, it's important to provide holistic support and education that focuses not just on specific outcomes but rather healthy infant bonding and realistic expectations.

A few weeks back I met for an interview for EchoLive.ie, it was a lovely experience and I enjoyed our chat.

Too many families in Ireland are still unfamiliar with the services postpartum doulas offer and articles like this help shine a light on this beautiful profession I represent.

If you are following me you already know what doulas do, comment one thing you know doulas do for families.
