Authenticity: liberation or risk?
Sometimes, self-deception functions as a psychological defense. Certain truths can threaten our self-image, our relationships, or the fragile balance of our daily lives.
When our actions, desires, and values conflict, psychological tension emerges. To reduce this discomfort, we may unconsciously distort reality, minimize certain facts, or avoid what is difficult to accept about ourselves.
Projection involves attributing to others what we refuse to recognize in ourselves. Displacement redirects emotions or inner conflicts toward a safer or more acceptable target. These mechanisms can temporarily protect psychological stability, but they may also distance us from ourselves.
Authenticity often begins with the difficult ability to face what is happening within us without immediately projecting it outward or reshaping it to preserve a reassuring image of ourselves.
If authenticity is a liberation, then from what?
If it is a risk, then of what?
