Pregnant women, don't let them put a hat on your baby immediately after birth.

Your baby's head smells amazing for a reason — it releases oxytocin which helps with bonding, feeding, and your mental health.

Keep that hat off for the golden hour at least.

Pregnant women you need to know that you have around a 1 in 2 chance of having an induction if you’re giving birth in most hospital settings for the first time.

Even though for the majority of “reasons” there is NO evidence that induction helps and quite a lot of evidence that it harms.

Here’s what you can do to try to avoid an induction
🤰Research shows eating 6 dates a day for at least 2 to 3 weeks prior to your due date can increase your chances of going into labour spontaneously.
🤰Pre Labour Acupuncture from wk37 to wk40 can ripen the cervix and help you go into spontaneous labour. Research also shows it reduces risk of induction, cesarean and epidural use.
🤰One of the triggers for labour is the baby’s head engaging and pressing on the cervix. Spending time on a gym ball, walking with 1 foot on a kerb or sideways up the stairs can help get baby’s head engaged.
🤰Say No – You have the right to refuse any medical intervention including induction. If you and your baby are fine and you suspect you are just being induced because you have a risk factor (which is different from being high risk) you can refuse. Look at the risks vs benefits for your situation.

I know it can be difficult to know the right questions to ask about induction so if you’d like a free Induction cheatsheet which includes guidelines and questions to ask your careprovider then comment CHEAT below and I’ll send it to you. Or send me a DM if you’d prefer not to comment.

If you're pregnant your chances of having your baby on your due date are only 4%.

The chances of you going beyond are 85%! Only 11% are born before thier due date.

This is because your " due date" is based on a calculation that was invented by a doctor in the early 1800s.

Now, women's lives have changed a lot since then. Our diet, work and lifestyle are so different.
Plus it assumes a 28 day cycle with ovulation and conception on day 14. Which is not true for a lot of women nowadays.

So no wonder so many women go past their "due date". It's a guesstimate at best.
If there was any other calculation used in medicine that was wrong 96% of the time then we wouldn't use it, right?

So why are we still using it in maternity care? Especially when really important decisions around cesarean and induction dates ( which can impact baby's short and long term health) are based on your due date.

Remember this if you're under pressure to induce for being "overdue". If you would like a free cheatsheet on questions to ask about an induction and the guidelines that the hospital is supposed to follow when seeking your consent then comment CHEAT below and I will send to you.

Pregnant women you need to know this 👇

Continuous monitoring also known as EFM or CCTG is the big belt that most hospitals insist on using on admission to the labour room to monitor the baby’s heartbeat.
You will often be told it is only for 20 mins to “get a baseline”

Research shows that in low risk women the use of CTG increases your risk of forceps and caesarean birth. It is safer to use the alternative option which is a doppler check every 15mins.

It is also important to know that just because you have a risk factor (age, race, BMI etc) this not automatically mean you are high risk. You can have a risk factor but if you and your baby are fine then you can be low risk.

Use your B.R.A.I.N analysis to decide what interventions you want to refuse in labour and put them in your birth plan.

Pregnant women you need to know this 👇

If you just say “delayed cord clamping” in your birth plan then some hospitals can interpret that to allow as little as 30 seconds.

It can take around 5 minutes for complete transfer of blood.

You DO want to delay cord clamping until the blood is fully transferred because if you clamp the cord too quick you could be losing up to one third of your baby’s precious blood volume.

Instead of arguing over how many minutes have passed the best thing to put in your plan is that you want to “delay clamping until the cord is white and has stopped pulsing or simply “wait for white”.

Ask for you or your partner to cut the cord as an extra precaution. You are in control then and can cut when you’re happy with how it looks.

Pregnant women I know it’s an exciting time but when you have baby news but don’t tell everyone your due date.

Your due date is a GUESS and the reality is that you have an 85% chance of going “overdue”.

And when you are 40 weeks, tired, fed up and hormonal the last thing you will want is a 100 texts a day asking “Any news?????” from the world and his mother.

Give people who ask a due month or a date that’s a few weeks later. Your real due date should be on a need to know basis – close family, childminder etc.

Anyone else will get the news when there is news.
