A special evening at The Little Museum of Dublin ✨

We were delighted to officially launch Born In Dublin: 200 Years Of The Coombe Hospital yesterday evening, a six-month exhibition celebrating two centuries of stories, change and advancing healthcare for women and newborns.

We were honoured to welcome the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Daryl Barron
to officially launch the exhibition and mark this special milestone in The Coombe's bicentenary year.

The evening also saw the unveiling of our new commemorative coffee table book, The Coombe Hospital 1826-2026. Written by Dr Michael O’Dowd, the book explores the people, places, stories and moments that have shaped The Coombe over the past 200 years and is now available to purchase from The Little Museum of Dublin's museum shop.

At The Coombe, our team play an important role in caring for women and their babies every day - combining technical expertise with compassion and patient-centred care.

We marked a number of important occasions last week, beginning with the recognition of colleagues reaching 20 and 25 years of service at The Coombe.

The Master’s Medal for the best presentation in Audit, QI or Research was awarded to Dr Sinead Cadogan for her project “Closing the technology gap: Real world evaluation of diabetes, technology use and pregnancy outcomes in women with type 1 diabetes” and the Master’s Academic Prize was presented to Dr Meredith Kinosh*ta in recognition of her MD research into methods of assessing breastmilk intake in preterm infants.

The week concluded with our annual Guinness Symposium lecture series, with this year's programme reflecting on The Coombe's 200 year history as part of our bicentenary celebrations. Our speakers shared their knowledge and experiences of the hospital, highlighting its evolution and contribution to women's and newborn healthcare over two centuries.

Born In The Coombe: 200 Years Of The Coombe Hospital

For 200 years, The Coombe has been part of the story of generations of women, newborns and families in Ireland.

Now, that story comes to life at

Opening to the public this Friday, 23 October 2026, Born in the Coombe: 200 Years of The Coombe Hospital is a six-month exhibition exploring the remarkable history of one of Ireland’s oldest maternity hospitals.

From its beginnings as the Coombe Lying-In Hospital near Meath Street in 1826, to its present-day home on Cork Street, the exhibition traces two centuries of change in maternity care - from birth being almost entirely at home to predominantly in hospitals, and the extraordinary advances in obstetrics, midwifery, gynaecology and neonatal medicine that have transformed outcomes for women and newborns.

But this is also a story about people.

Through touching, funny and sometimes heart-breaking personal stories, the exhibition reveals the astonishing range of experiences that new life brings - and the women, families, healthcare professionals and support staff who have shaped The Coombe's story along the way.

Born In The Coombe is a collaboration between The Coombe Hospital and The Little Museum of Dublin, and forms part of The Coombe Hospital's bicentenary celebrations.

🌿 World Menopause Day | 18 October

In recent years, there has been a welcome shift towards talking more openly about menopause, its symptoms and the impact they can have on women’s health and everyday lives.

But menopause affects every woman differently, and for some, additional support or specialist care may be needed.

Women living with certain medical or chronic conditions may require care that goes beyond what can be managed in primary or community care.

That’s where our Complex Menopause Clinic comes in.

At The Coombe, we support women who require specialist assessment and management of their menopause, helping them to understand their symptoms and explore appropriate treatment and support.

While menopause is a natural stage of life, women shouldn’t have to simply accept symptoms that are having a significant impact on their health, wellbeing or quality of life.

This World Menopause Day, we’re continuing the conversation and highlighting the importance of accessible, appropriate care for women at every stage of menopause.

🕊️ Our Remembrance Tree

During Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Week, our Remembrance Tree will be on display at The Coombe for families and staff who would like to remember a baby they have lost during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy.

There is no right or wrong way to remember. For some, writing a name may be a comforting way to acknowledge a life that mattered and a baby who will always be part of their story.

🕊️ Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Week | 9-15 October

As a maternity and women’s health hospital, we see the joy of new life - but we also see loss. Our team supports women and families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

This week, we join families, healthcare professionals and communities around the world in remembering babies who have died during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy.

Throughout the week, The Coombe Hospital will be lit up in pink and blue as a symbol of love, remembrance and support for all of us affected by pregnancy and baby loss. 🩷💙

On 15th October at 7pm, families are invited to take part in a Global Wave of Light by lighting a candle at home in memory of their baby.
