A vile 5.30am start after zero sleep 🤮 but we made it! All my pre planning and googling paid off but my goodness my body is feeling the consequences this evening! Another joy tor many of us in the neurodivergent community is that when we have had to push through mental and emotional stressors we can have flare ups of various conditions. Research shows that statistically, fibromyalgia and other central sensitivity syndromes affect neurodivergent people—particularly those with autism and ADHD, significantly more than the neurotypical population. I would be happy to make a video about this topic if people are interested ❤️

Many will have gotten leaving cert results yesterday. Some will be delighted. Some will be disappointed. But for many of our young people I believe the congratulations and celebrations should be less about points and more about the fact they survived a system which caused them so much stress! In Ireland we do not offer choices and options when it comes to pathways to third level education. Parents of neurodivergent children who struggle to fit in, learn and thrive in our school system quickly realise the message: they must either keep pushing their child to go into school or “give in and give up” on them and their future educational opportunities. This message is so harmful as it often puts parents and their children under immense pressure to ignore mental health red flags in favour of improved school attendance and grades.

So I want to say well done to all the parents and young people out there who managed to survive the school years, whether that was attending school or stepping away from it! There really should be an award for all of us for doing our best to keep going, to keep sane and to keep believing that things would get better because for most of us, life does get so much better when we don’t have to make our children fit into a system that does not suit them

Neurodivergence is not a flaw, but it is also not a choice!
