In ancient China, it is said that doctors were paid when the people in their village were healthy—not when they were sick. The idea was simple: the physician's success was measured by the wellbeing of the community.
Perhaps this is part of why Traditional Chinese Medicine has endured for thousands of years. Its focus is not simply on managing illness, but on healing—on restoring balance, supporting the body's innate capacity to recover, and helping people return to health.
The word healing is important because it speaks to more than the absence of symptoms. It suggests a journey back towards wholeness, resilience and balance. It is about asking not only "How do we treat this?" but also "How do we help this person become well again?"
A healthcare system should ultimately be measured by how well it helps people heal and stay well, not by how dependent it can make them on being unwell.
