Although children’s worries might seem trivial to us, to them they are just as concerning as our biggest worries. As adults, we have a tendency to respond to children’s worries by saying to them, “Don’t worry about that”. However, children aren’t able to control their worries and so telling them not to worry is unhelpful. It also dismisses their worries without addressing them and tells children that worrying is wrong. Instead, we need to acknowledge to children that their worries are valid (e.g., “That must feel scary”), normalise their worries (e.g., “I felt scared like that when…”) and then help them process their worries (e.g., “Even though we might feel worried, these are all the reasons why we are actually very safe…”). By doing this, we teach children how to process their worries effectively. We also teach them that approaching parents with their worries can be supportive and beneficial

Being a parent is both a rewarding and challenging experience. Parents want the best for their children but are sometimes unsure how best to navigate the issues and challenges that arise in children and adolescents. Often parents have questions or concerns about a particular aspect of their child’s development, behaviour or general psychological wellbeing that they would like to discuss with a professional. Sometimes this is just simply to reassure them that their child's development or behaviour is normal, at other times it is because they have specific concerns about their child for which they require professional advice.

At Parent Advice we are dedicated to providing expert evidenced-based advice and information on a wide range of issues. Parents are provided with 1:1 confidential consultations with Dr Vincent McDarby, Chartered Clinical Psychologist, who has over twenty years’ experience working with children and adolescents, and their parents.

These consultations provide parents and caregivers with an opportunity to discuss any queries or concerns they have in relation to their child and to be provided with evidence-based advice and interventions that are tailored to their individual child and family. Children are not seen as part of these consultations but if you feel that your child needs to be seen by a psychologist or other relevant professional, Dr McDarby can provide advice on this.
