I found myself telling my little boy to calm down or relax a lot the last few weeks so instead of repeating myself I done things to help his body calm down.
A lot of people think with high energy children they need to run it off and increase exercise but actually often what the body needs is more priopceptive input.
Let me explain how this can help regulate.
Why does “heavy work” help some children regulate?
Heavy work activities—like pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, and digging—provide proprioceptive input, which is information from the muscles and joints that helps the brain understand where the body is in space.
This strong, predictable sensory feedback can help some children feel more organized, focused, and in control of their bodies. That's why after carrying a laundry basket, climbing at the playground, or helping with chores, many children seem calmer and more ready to engage.
Think of proprioceptive input as an anchor for the nervous system: it meets a child's need for movement while supporting attention and self-regulation. 💚
