PUBLIC EVENT ǀ The 100-Year Life: What 20 Years of TILDA Tells Us About Our Future Selves

What does it mean to live longer and live well?

This June, we are marking 20 years of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) with a special public event at Trinity College Dublin exploring what two decades of research has taught us about ageing, health, work, connection and our future selves.

Since it was established in 2006, TILDA has helped transform our understanding of ageing in Ireland through the extraordinary generosity of thousands of participants and internationally recognised research spanning health, social and economic life.

To mark this milestone, we are delighted to welcome our esteemed colleague, Professor Sarah Harper CBE, Clore Professor of Gerontology at the University of Oxford and Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, for a keynote lecture titled: “Preparing Together: Rethinking Ageing in the Modern World”.

Professor Harper’s lecture will explore one of the defining questions of our time: how individuals, societies and institutions adapt to increasing longevity and population ageing — and how we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live long, healthy and fulfilled lives.

The event will also feature a thought-provoking conversation chaired by Jonathan McCrea, with:
• Professor Rose Anne Kenny
• Professor Sarah Harper CBE
• Professor Alan Barrett
• Professor Cathal McCrory

Together, they will explore healthy ageing, inequality, longer working lives, social connection and how evidence can help shape healthier and more connected futures for all.

As Ireland becomes more connected, it’s important to consider who might be left behind.

Earlier this week, a discussion on RTÉ Radio 1 with David McCullagh explored how digitalisation is shaping everyday life.

Our PI, Rose Anne Kenny, shared evidence from TILDA on internet access and digital engagement among older adults in Ireland. Alongside contributions from Sean Moynihan (ALONE) and Mary McCarthy, the discussion highlighted how digital barriers can affect everything from accessing services to managing finances and staying socially connected.

Digital inclusion is key to supporting independence, participation and quality of life as we age.

Our Principal Investigator, Professor Rose Anne Kenny, recently appeared on Episode 6 of Reset Your Health with Jamie Oliver, titled “Ageing Disgracefully”, as part of an exciting series exploring how we can rethink health across the life course.

Drawing on over two decades of research from TILDA at Trinity College Dublin, Rose Anne and Jamie discuss how factors such as creativity, purpose, social connection and community, physical activity, good sleep, and having a positive attitude can enhance "wellspan" and healthier ageing.

The conversation reflects the strength of interdisciplinary research and collaboration and the importance of translating ageing research into ideas that resonate beyond academia, informing how we think about ageing at a population level and as individuals.

Your sleep isn't lazy time: it's repair time! 🧠 Deep sleep is one of your secret weapons for a stronger, healthier future.
Sleep is a regenerative process essential for memory consolidation, lowering stress, clearing metabolic waste from the brain, and regulating your immune system.
TILDA research with Dr shows that poor sleep is linked to cognitive decline and increased disease risk. The good news? Movement and mental well-being are key to getting your rest right!
Watch the full Sleep Series where chats with Dr Scarlett about setting effective sleep goals and why aiming for 7–9 hours a night is non-negotiable for long-term health.

Your future self will thank you for hitting that play button! ✨ Movement is the key to healthy ageing: it helps you start at a higher peak, slow the rate of decline, and maintain independence for longer.

TILDA research confirms that focusing on walking speed and starting resistance training now (yes, as early as your 30s!) is crucial for protecting your brain health and preventing age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia).

Train for your future self—it starts today! Watch the full series on Movement Matters where chats with Dr Ann Monaghan about the latest findings.
