Gassy, unsettled after every feed, and you don’t know where to start? It’s almost always one of two things.
Either baby is swallowing air while feeding, usually down to latch or positioning. Or baby’s own gut bacteria are fermenting the milk as their digestive system matures, which is very common and normally settles by three to four months.
The first is the easier one to check. Listen for clicking, gulping or gasping, high pitched sounds, or baby coming on and off the breast. Hear any of these, and latch and positioning is the place to start. Feeding sounds quiet and settled? Then digestion is the more likely answer, and reassurance (plus a little time) does most of the work.
Not sure which camp your baby is in, or want a second pair of eyes and ears on a feed? I offer consults in person, at home in South Dublin, or online. Send a message or use the link in bio to book.
