Smoke Free Campus 🚭 The Rotunda Hospital, the oldest continuously operating maternity hospital in the world, and one of the busiest in Europe! We pride ourselves on respecting the individual woman’s right to choose the care pathway that suits her needs and celebrate the fact that for over 274 years, hundreds of thousands of women have trusted the Rotunda to care for themselves and t

heir babies during this precious and exciting time. Founded in 1745 by Bartholomew Mosse, surgeon and man-midwife, the original Dublin Lying-In Hospital was a maternity training hospital, the first of its kind anywhere. In 1757, the institution moved to a different location where it became “The New Lying-In Hospital”. This is the hospital complex that is referred to today as simply “The Rotunda”. The Rotunda Hospital is unique as an institution in that it has continued to provide an unbroken record of service to women and babies since its foundation in 1745 and has occupied its present premises since 1757.

Top Tips to Support Your Baby’s Communication Development. Throughout the week, we have been exploring what it means to “See the Baby,” noticing, valuing and responding to each baby’s unique ways of communicating.

Here are some simple ways to support your baby’s communication every day:
🩵 Slow down and observe your baby’s cues, expressions and movements.
🩵 Respond warmly to babbling, sounds, gestures and eye contact.
🩵 Get face-to-face with baby during everyday interactions.
🩵 Talk, sing, read and play together regularly.
🩵 Follow your baby’s interests and allow time for them to respond.
🩵 Remember that every baby communicates differently and develops at their own pace.

The small moments throughout the day during feeding, changing, cuddles, play and routines all help babies feel seen, heard and understood.

Play is an important way babies learn to communicate and connect with the world around them. Through play, babies explore, express themselves, build relationships and share their thoughts and feelings before they use words.

Benefits of learning through play:
🩵 Encourages interaction and shared attention with parents and caregivers.
🩵 Supports early language, listening and communication development.
🩵 Helps babies express emotions, preferences and interests.
🩵 Builds confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills.
🩵 Gives adults opportunities to “see baby” by noticing what they enjoy and how they respond.

Simple activities like peek-a-boo, copying sounds, sensory play and face-to-face interaction can have a positive impact on communication development. A good tip is to follow baby’s lead, allow time for responses and enjoy playful moments together.

🎶 Music and singing are wonderful ways of connecting and communicating with babies.
Babies respond to rhythm, melody, facial expressions and familiar voices before they start using words. Music helps us tune into baby’s feelings, cues and unique ways of communicating.

Benefits of using music with babies:
💙 Singing helps establish eye contact and strengthens bonding.
💙 Music creates warm, responsive interactions between parent and baby.
💙 Songs and rhythm support non-verbal communication and emotional connection.
💙 Music can soothe, comfort and help babies feel safe and secure.
💙 Repetition through songs supports memory, listening and early communication skills.

When using music with baby, mouth words clearly, repeat favourite songs and add gentle movement or actions. Watch how baby responds and follow their cues. Every baby will engage in their own special way.

📚Sharing books with babies is a wonderful way to build connection and support communication from the earliest days. Babies may not understand every word yet, but they are already learning through your voice, facial expressions, eye contact and shared moments together.

Benefits of sharing books with babies:
🩵Helps babies hear and become familiar with language and sounds.
🩵 Encourages bonding and close connection through shared attention.
🩵 Supports listening, memory and early communication skills.
🩵 Gives babies opportunities to point, look, move and respond in their own unique way.
🩵Helps us slow down and truly “see the baby” by noticing what captures their attention and interest.

When sharing books with baby, follow their lead. Let them touch the pages, look at pictures, babble, move around or return to favourite pages again and again. The most important thing is enjoying the interaction together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Postnatal Hub in Hampson House today for Baby Communication Week.

We discussed ways to connect, communicate and respond to babies’ unique cues through music, stories, play and everyday interactions. Reminding us to slow down and notice how babies communicate in their own unique way. It was lovely to see parents connecting, sharing experiences and taking time to focus on the small moments that help babies feel seen and understood.

It's Baby Communication Week 2026! This year’s theme is all about “Seeing the Baby.” Recognising babies as unique individuals who communicate with us from the very beginning through their movements, expressions, sounds and behaviours.

Every baby has their own personality, preferences and way of expressing their needs. When we slow down, observe their cues and respond with warmth and care, we help babies feel safe, understood and connected.

Throughout the week we will share ways to support babies' communication development through connection, play, music, books and responsive interactions.
