The field of Equine Assisted Services has changed enormously over the past few decades. Research is stronger. Education is developing. Horse wellbeing has moved much closer to the centre of our thinking.

But where do we go from here?

At the HHRF–HETI–CZU Prague 2026 International Symposium, Tamara Merritt from Hearts & Horses, USA, will invite us to look both backwards and forwards in her presentation:

Looking Back to Move Forward: The Next Chapter of Equine-Assisted Services

Drawing on the development of the profession and themes emerging throughout the symposium, Tamara will explore how research, education, collaboration, innovation and horse wellbeing have shaped Equine Assisted Services — and what may shape the next chapter.

It is also a reminder that the future of this field will not be created by one organisation, profession or country.

It will be built through collaboration, curiosity and a willingness to keep learning from each other.

📚🐴 A young person is much more likely to learn when learning feels meaningful, practical and worth showing up for.

At Brook Hill Farm in the USA**, that principle has been put into practice for more than two decades through an Equine Assisted Learning programme for young people at risk of leaving school early.

At the HHRF–HETI–CZU Prague 2026 International Symposium, Professor Jo Anne Miller will present:

Reading, Riding, and Arithmetic
Applying Equine-Assisted Learning: A Program for At-Risk Youth

Students partner with rescue horses while developing resilience, social-emotional skills and learning strategies. Academic concepts are integrated into mounted activities and then connected back to classroom learning with a licensed teacher.

And the outcomes are remarkable.

By 2026, **143 young people had completed the programme — and every one of them graduated from high school.**

Among the 86 students followed between 2008 and 2022, 100% graduated on time and continued into post-secondary education or technical job training.

In her presentation, Jo Anne will share how this programme works, what has been learned over more than 20 years, and how Equine Assisted Learning can become part of a meaningful educational pathway for young people at risk.

🐴 Can Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy support psychological stabilisation during addiction treatment?

In this video, Štěpán Zítek, PhD, invites you to join his presentation at the HHRF–HETI–CZU Prague 2026 International Symposium:

The Influence of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy on the Psychological State of Patients with Addiction

Štěpán will present findings from a controlled study conducted with 68 hospitalised patients receiving addiction treatment at Kosmonosy Psychiatric Hospital in the Czech Republic.

The research examined the effects of a structured four-week Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy programme on anxiety, depressive symptoms, perceived stress and physical manifestations of anxiety.

Participants receiving Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy showed significant improvements across all psychological measures assessed within the group. The findings suggest that even a brief programme may complement conventional psychiatric care and support emotional regulation, stress management and adaptation to the recovery process.
