Community pharmacists have proven, through the rollout of emergency contraception, vaccination programmes, gender based-violence strategies and now the new Contraception Prescribing Service, that they are ready and capable of taking on a greater role in women’s health. On Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day, pharmacists are reminding women, partners and families that choosing not to drink alcohol during pregnancy, and when planning a pregnancy, is the safest option for both mother and baby.
There is no known safe level of alcohol during pregnancy. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can increase the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, low birth weight and birth defects.
Women and families should not feel they have to navigate conflicting advice alone. Community pharmacists are available to provide accessible, evidence-based advice on alcohol and pregnancy and can help people access further support where needed.
