The war in Gaza has devastated the region’s higher education infrastructure. Several universities have been damaged or destroyed, forcing students to continue their studies online under extremely difficult conditions. They are persevering despite the lack of electricity, limited internet acces

Well it's been quite a while since the ABH fb page was updated. We've been up to lots of s**t since the last time and more s**t is coming down the line. Indeed more s**t than our existing team of professional archaeologists (all unionised) can shake a s**tty stick at. So, we're looking for more archaeologists, initially for 4-6 weeks in Dublin city centre. Interested? First things first then. You'd need at least a year's worth of experience on site. And I don't mean scratching the subsoil looking for flints or the meso-whatever-the-f**k, out beyond the canals. You'll also need an odd enthusiasm which puts you right on the spectrum and makes your normal friends think you're a total nutbag. If you don't like being covered in s**te everyday and working out a short-term contract, you're not the sort of archaeologist we need. You will need however to get used to the idea that ABH pays considerably more than the bigger companies. That's because it's run by archaeologists for archaeology and the boss is a communist. We don't provide accommodation either. Yeah, I know, but like come on, it's Dublin. If you think you've got what it takes and all that usual recruitment HR doublespeak arsetalk and you're a member of the archaeological branch of Unite the Union, send details (and photos of your guitar) to [email protected]

The Archaeology of 1916 Project will investigate the archaeological legacy and aftermath of the Easter Rebellion in Dublin city, through archaeological survey (this image shows the interior of No. 19 Moore Street, showing the hole (look at the patterns in the brickwork, exposed here with plaster removed) created by the 1916 Volunteers after they left the GPO and as they tunnelled from building to building). The project is being led by Archaeology and Built Heritage, and UCD School of Archaeology, in partnership with Dublin City Council, with added financial support from the Heritage Council, UCD Research, and UCD Communications. The project website provides more information abut the project here https://thearchaeologyof1916.wordpress.com/about/

Archaeology and Built Heritage supports the idea that everyone is entitled to a living wage. We also have an in-house policy of only employing members of Unite, the Union or an equivalent organisation representing archaeological/cultural workers. There!

Wow, it's been a long while since the last update. So what's been happening? Ok, well the fieldwork for the Luas cellars investigation finished before Christmas and the reports are being finalised. A few of us stayed on in January to investigate the Broadstone Line of the Royal Canal.

In a related story we're excavating a deep shaft at the moment to try and locate the culvert for the (perhaps) slightly diverted Bradoge stream. You want more? I'll be posting something on it next week over on Wasted... otherwise you can get to McGeogh's in Phibsborough on Monday 5 May for the full story at Phizzfest.

Then what? Oh yeah, a trip over to Manchester (to give a version of the 1916 paper at the National Conference of Irish Studies) brought some more vinyl into ABHhq. The place is rockin'. What's happening after? Early June on Inishark's happenen' http://clicproject.wordpress.com/

I do like my job. Although Pat's aren't really doing that well...

If you're an irish archaeologist rerading this and you haven't yet joined UNITE, well... just join, will ya? You know who you are...

Well, we're still busy on the Luas Cross City cellars project. In other news, there've been recent lectures on the Archaeology of Disco and presentations to UCD students on the benefits of joining the IAI. We're still involved with planning works to the Courthouse in Ardee to provide better public access and we'll be excavating soon in High Park, a former magdalene laundry, for the Respond Housing Association. There's talk of ABH sponsoring the Harold's Cross U13 football team (but they'd better start winning a few games soon) and there's an upcoming lecture to the Clare Archaeological Society and an archaeological/archaeological tour of the 1916 Moore Street sector for UCD. Oh yeah, and Pat's for the League.

Into Week 2 on the Luas cellars project. If you're passing down the eastern side of Westmoreland Street or find yourself up on Dominick Street, just off Parnell Street you'll see exposed cellars. Isn't the weather lovely?

Written a piece on Bofin over at Wasted... Otherwise digging tiny test pits at Broadstone for gateposts (!) and engaging in polemics with wetlanders regarding a news piece published in the summer edition of Archaeology Ireland. Recommend that more people read Gramsci and indeed there'll be a reading of the Prison Diaries instead of the usual health & safety induction for the ABH Luas brigadas on Monday...

Lots of stuff happening. We've just been liked by Philippa de Barra for a start. Otherwise we've won the RPA contract to investigate a s**t load of cellars along the new Luas from Stephen's Green up to Cabra. We're just finishing off an architectural assessmenr of the Courthouse in Ardee (the castle thing on the right as you're heading north) and... we're about to start excavating two eighteenth-century (?) houses on Inishbofin with the University of Notre Dame. We'll be posting stuff more frequently as seo amach here and on Wasted...
