Period cramps can feel very different from one woman to another — and in Chinese medicine, the type of pain matters. 🌿

We look at when the pain happens, where you feel it, what makes it better or worse, and the colour and flow of your period to understand the underlying pattern.

Your period can tell us a lot about what’s happening inside your body. 🌿

Save this for your next cycle ❤️

Why are women often the ones saying, “I’m always cold”? ❄️
From a Chinese Medicine perspective, a woman’s body moves through repeated demands on Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang throughout life.

🩸 Monthly blood loss
🤱 Pregnancy & childbirth
🍼 Breastfeeding
🧠 Stress, worry & emotional exhaustion

Over time, if the body isn’t adequately replenished, this may contribute to feelings of coldness and, in TCM terms, patterns associated with period cramps and a “cold uterus.”

This is why I often tell women: warmth is not just comfort — it’s nourishment. 🌿
Keep your lower body warm, choose warm nourishing foods, rest when you need it, and give your body time to replenish.

Your period pain is information. Listen to what your body is telling you.

🩸 What does the colour of your period blood say in Chinese Medicine?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we don’t only ask when your period comes — we also look at the colour, flow, clots and pain as part of the overall pattern.

❤️ Healthy-looking menstrual blood
Typically a rich, fresh red with a relatively smooth flow.
🩷 Pale or watery blood
May fit a pattern of Blood or Qi deficiency, especially alongside tiredness, dizziness or feeling cold.
🟣 Dark red / purple blood
May be associated with Blood Stasis, particularly when there are clots or strong cramping.
🔥 Very bright or deep red blood
May fit a Heat pattern, especially when bleeding is heavier or accompanied by feeling hot or restless.

Your period is more than something that happens every month — in Chinese medicine, it can provide useful clues about your overall pattern.

Period pain isn’t something you should simply accept in Chinese medicine.

A healthy menstrual cycle should arrive relatively smoothly, without pain that stops you from working, sleeping, exercising or living your normal life.

Menstrual cramps may be associated with patterns such as Qi stagnation, Blood stasis, Cold in the uterus, or deficiency. The pattern can be different for every woman, which is why treatment is individual.

Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, moxa, may be used in TCM to help restore balance and support a more comfortable cycle.
