❌ Don’t remove the deadlift. Improve it.

Deadlifts have gained a reputation for being “hard on your back,” but the reality is usually much more nuanced.

For most people, the answer isn’t to avoid deadlifts altogether—it’s to identify why they don’t feel right. Is it your technique? The variation you’re using? The load? Your mobility? Your training history?

When these factors are addressed, the deadlift can be one of the most valuable exercises in your programme.

It strengthens your glutes, hamstrings, back and grip, while training one of the most functional movements we perform every day: lifting something safely from the floor.

Research consistently shows that resistance training helps preserve muscle, strength and physical function as we age, and deadlifts train many of the muscles and movement patterns that support those qualities.

So instead of asking, “Should I stop deadlifting?” ask:
➡️ “How can I deadlift better?”

If deadlifts don’t feel right for you, it doesn’t always mean they’re the problem. Sometimes, it just means your body needs a different approach.

💬 Have deadlifts ever felt uncomfortable for you? Let me know below.

📚🔎Research referenced: Systematic reviews by Martín-Fuentes et al. (2020) on deadlift variations and Tan et al. (2026) on resistance training for healthy aging.

I’m confused- Is my pelvic floor tense or weak!?

There’s a lot of information out there but everyone is different. It’s not always weakness causing your symptoms- sometimes it’s actually the opposite.

Here are a couple of clues that can help point you in the right direction.

**The best way to know is to have an individualised assessment to determine the cause and get you started on a programme designed for you!

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE‼️💡

The donkey kick can be a fantastic exercise for managing muscular lower back pain… but only when it’s performed well.

One variation effectively targets the glutes and prepares them for heavier strength work. The other can place unnecessary stress on the lower back and potentially trigger discomfort.

The mistake? Treating it like a height competition.

Many people think that kicking the leg higher automatically means greater glute activation. In reality, once the movement starts coming from the lower back instead of the hip, it’s more likely to cause irritation.

The goal isn’t to get the leg as high as possible—it’s to keep it controlled and let the glutes do the work.

If donkey kicks have ever aggravated your back, this simple technique adjustment could be the missing piece of the puzzle. 👊🏼

Why a blanket ‘Ban the Clam’ isn’t always the answer❕

When in the early, building block stage of rehab, the clam can be a great starting point for muscle activation.
