It's , and we want to talk about something people don't say often enough: this isn't just good for baby. It's good for mum too. The benefits genuinely run both ways.

Let's start with baby.

Breastmilk contains antibodies and immune factors produced by mum’s immune system, including responses to microbes she is exposed to, helping provide targeted immune protection. This is something formula cannot fully replicate.

Breastmilk also seeds baby's gut with beneficial bacteria. That microbiome plays an important role in immune development and may influence metabolism and brain development over the longer term. Also it supplies DHA (an omega 3 fatty acid) and other nutrients (such as choline) that the baby's brain needs during one of the fastest periods of brain growth and development across the lifespan.

Breastfeeding is associated with slightly lower rates of childhood obesity. This may be partly related to differences in appetite regulation, feeding patterns and hormones involved in growth and metabolism.

Now let's talk about mum, because this side of the story gets told far less.

Breastfeeding stimulates oxytocin release, which supports bonding, relaxation and uterine recovery. Positive breastfeeding experiences are associated with better maternal wellbeing, although of course, postpartum mental health is influenced by many factors.

Producing breastmilk requires additional energy, typically around 450–500 extra calories per day. Research shows many women who breastfeed lose weight somewhat faster in months three to six postpartum, though this varies a lot from person to person.

And here's and interesting link, one meta analysis study showed longer breastfeeding duration is associated with a modestly lower lifetime risk of breast and ovarian cancers. However, the size of the protective effect varies between studies.

Finally, to be very clear, none of this is a judgement on mothers who can't or choose not to breastfeed. Skin-to-skin contact, babywearing and responsive care are also powerful ways to support bonding and attachment. But where breastfeeding is possible, the health case for it, for both mother and infant, is a strong one.
