At the NRH, family members and carers travel with patients on their rehabilitation journeys, participating in education, advocating for patients, liaising with rehabilitation teams and offering encouragement when it is needed most.

We recognise the vital role you all play in bringing hope, kindness and compassion. Thank you!

To mark International Aphasia Awareness Month, the NRH Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) Team is providing a series of educational events and resources to support all staff, clinical and non-clinical, in meeting the communication access requirements of people with Aphasia, throughout the month of June.

Aphasia impacts language, not intellect – the thoughts are there, the challenge lies in finding the words.

Aphasia is a language and communication disorder which may be caused as a result of a stroke, head injury, brain tumour or other neurological illness. People with aphasia may have difficulty with one or more of the following: speaking, understanding, reading, writing or using numbers.

The NRH SLT Team will provide information for all staff about communication support strategies that can help provide greater accessibility when working or interacting with people with aphasia.

The NRH proudly celebrated World Assistive Technology (AT) Day. Members of the NRH AT Team shared their expert knowledge on the transformative impact of assistive technology on the lives of people with complex rehabilitation needs, during their inpatient rehabilitation programme.

NRH Health professionals and support staff play a central role in the provision of specialised Assistive Technology for inpatients with complex rehabilitation needs. Services are provided across multiple AT categories including mobility, communication, and digital AT for self-care and environmental control. Staff who play critical roles in AT service delivery include, but are not limited to, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, SLTs, clinical engineering, prosthetists and orthotists, medical, nursing and AT specialists or technicians.

The NRH contributed to the recently published WHO (European Region) Report on ‘Assistive Technology and Capacity Assessment in Ireland’ by providing a formal written submission and hosting a site visit as a contribution to the data collection exercise, and advocating for a system where everyone can access the assistive technology they need to participate in life and to enhance quality of life.

It’s National Volunteering Week and we wish to express our immense gratitude to all our volunteers who consistently attend the NRH and support our patients and staff with their valuable time, energy, skills, friendship, and kindness.

Over 30 separate volunteering roles are covered in the NRH, including – to name just a few - orientation for new patients, visiting with patients and providing support at mealtimes, assistance with coordinating and facilitating patients’ events, weekly music sessions with seasonal highlights, Peata pet therapy sessions, and providing support to patients and staff in a range of therapeutic and recreational activities all year round.

Patient feedback highlights the benefits gained by patients through engagement with our volunteers and we are enormously grateful for your continuing dedication and support.

This week, to highlight World Hand Hygiene Day, the NRH Infection Prevention and Control Team hosted an information stand to remind colleagues that good hand hygiene is one of the simplest but most effective tools in healthcare, helping to prevent the spread of infection and protect patients and staff alike.

Thank you to all the staff who participated and contributed to making this initiative a great success and demonstrating your commitment to patient safety.

As we celebrated our wonderful HSCP colleagues this week, OT Manager Lisa Held represented the NRH at the TCD Health Science School event, hosted by the Occupational Therapy School for the final year students. We welcomed the opportunity to introduce the students to the broad range of services delivered by the Occupational Therapists across the Brain Injury, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Limb Absence, and Paediatric Rehabilitation Programmes at the NRH, and to highlight the many benefits of embarking on a career with the NRH.
