Held, OT Manager and Aisling Weyham, Senior Occupational Therapist at the NRH represented the NRH at the Inclusive Mobility Summer School 2026, hosted by Ghent University and organised as part of BOPALiM (Building Opportunities for Participation and Mobility) COST Action. The focus of the event was on enhancing mobility, accessibility, and social participation for older adults and people with disabilities across Europe and beyond.
Invited experts from practice and the public sector work with academic staff to explore medical fitness-to-drive assessment and intervention across countries and examined how health, context and regulatory frameworks shape practice, with cross-country discussion on legislation and guidelines.
Lisa and Aisling contributed to WG1 (Working Group 1 – Fitness to Drive) which plans to define standardised, uniform, evidence-based measures of off- and on-road driving evaluation criteria and assessments by developing clear criteria for determining fitness to drive based on functional ability (rather than impairments or diagnosis) that can be implemented by different health care professionals or motor vehicle licensing boards. This implies a shift from the medical fitness to drive assessment to a more functional and individual approach, based on actual performance in driving, appreciation of the driving environment (for example, rural versus urban), and the process of functional changes over time.
Thanks to Lisa and Aisling for your participation at this event, providing an opportunity to strengthen NRH connections with international colleagues, share knowledge and experience, suggestions for next steps and further resources.
