Did a member of staff make a difference to your care, or support you or a loved one when it mattered most?

Every day, our staff go above and beyond to provide compassionate, high-quality care and support. The 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 give patients, families and visitors the opportunity to say thank you by recognising those who made a lasting impact during their experience at St James's Hospital.

A nomination means so much to our staff. Previous award winner Melissa Meally said:

"Winning the award was a tremendous honour, and I'm grateful to the family for their generosity and willingness to tell their story."

Whether it was a kind word, extra support during a difficult time, or exceptional care that made all the difference, we'd love to hear your story.

Take a few minutes to recognise a staff member who went above and beyond and help us celebrate the people behind the care. 💙

Last week, patients, families and staff came together to mark an important milestone, with over 150 patients now having received CAR-T therapy at St James's Hospital.

Since becoming the first hospital in Ireland to deliver CAR-T therapy in 2021, we have seen the difference this pioneering treatment can make for people living with relapsed and treatment-resistant blood cancers. For many patients and their loved ones, CAR-T therapy has provided hope when other treatment options had been exhausted.

The event was an opportunity to celebrate the patients and families who have been part of this journey, reflect on how far the programme has come, and remember those who are no longer with us.

CAR-T therapy is a powerful example of how research, innovation and clinical expertise can come together to give people access to life-changing treatments, offering hope, more time with loved ones and new possibilities for the future.

Thank you to all the patients and families who shared their stories, our healthcare partners (NCCP, HSE Ireland and Roinn Sláinte, Department of Health) and to the multidisciplinary teams whose dedication and compassion continue to make these treatments possible for patients across Ireland.

This week, staff came together to mark 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲 with the launch of 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬, a new patient-led support group for people who use, or may require, tube feeding following head and neck cancer.

Co-designed by people with lived experience alongside the Head & Neck Dietetics team and Quality and Safety and Improvement Directorate, the support group creates a supportive community where patients can connect, share experiences, exchange practical advice and support one another through every stage of their journey.

This is a wonderful example of patient partnership in action, helping ensure no one has to navigate tube feeding alone.
If you or a person you know uses, or may require, home tube feeding following head and neck cancer, is a patient of St James’s Hospital and would like to find out more about the 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 support group, please speak to a member of our Head and Neck Dietetics team or email 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐜@𝐬𝐭𝐣𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬.𝐢𝐞.

At St James's Hospital, thousands of patients and families have been cared for by dedicated staff whose kindness, expertise and compassion have helped make difficult days a little easier.
To mark St James's Day, we were proud to rename five hospital wards in honour of extraordinary colleagues whose contributions have left a lasting legacy at our hospital.

The wards now carry the names of:

✨ Prof. John Prichard
✨ Ms Sheila Clarke
✨ Prof. Eilis McGovern
✨ Prof. Fiona Mulcahy
✨ Mrs Carole Keena

These individuals dedicated their careers to caring for patients, supporting families, advancing healthcare and helping shape St James's Hospital into the institution it is today.

It was a privilege to welcome their families, friends and former colleagues to a special ceremony celebrating their lives and their remarkable contributions.

As Minister of State, Catherine Ardagh noted on the day, these dedicated individuals gave decades of service to the patients of St James's Hospital and to the wider Dublin 8 community.

Their names will now be remembered by generations of patients, visitors and staff who pass through these wards in the years ahead.
