A simple but very effective diaphragm self activation drill and breathing practice......enjoy!!! 😌🙏✨️

The diaphragm is the one muscle that, when working well, encourages the expansion of our system rather than collapse, it calms the nervous system, promoting the all-important parasympathetic state, we all wish to achieve. This short video explains perfectly the key roles it plays, and this is exactly why every activation session starts with the diaphragmatic activation ❤️✨️💪

The vagus nerve is what we activate when we do our Zone 1 drills and our deep diaphragmatic breath work. It helps us drop in our parasympathetic state, i.e., rest, digest, and healing mode. I love this information video on this longest cranial nerve indicating its connection to such key organs in the body. If you have let your activations slide lately, let this be a reminder to get yourself back to doing daily Zone 1 activations ❤️✨️👌

Patient consent gained ✅️
This lovely patient came to me with a 3 month history of ongoing right shoulder pain and radiculopathy.
However, upon assessing her, it was evident she was experiencing frequent involuntary body twitches. She explained she had experienced these for the past 2yrs on and off, but they had worsened in the past 3 months..

She tested as a bilateral zero in her initial session. Which indicated that she was in a chronic state of overwhelm, and she was really just running on adrenaline. My priority was to help her calm her nervous system and teach her techniques she could follow daily to interrupt her stress response.

1. I taught her how to find an internal anchor point, to focus on during her daily mini mediations, to help clear and calm her mind.

2. I then taught her how to activate her diaphragm and how to belly breathe to calm her nervous system.

3. I then taught her how to activate her hip flexors and bum muscles to provide a sense of safety in her body.

She returned for her follow-up the next week delighted to report her body twitches she had experienced for 2yrs had completely settled ❤️❤️❤️

Lesson: Give the body a little bit of the right information regularly, and it will respond positively 🤩🙏✨️

I love these kinds of post treatment messages ❤️❤️❤️. This was from a new patient today who attended my clinic with chronic back pain, low energy, and increased levels of anxiety. This patient tested as a weak bilateral zero, meaning they were caught in a cycle of mental overwhelm, which was affecting their physiology, as well as their mind. Today, I got this patient breathing with the diaphragm and got their hip flexors and bum muscles firing. Lots of exciting work to do in the follow-up session, but in this one session alone, this patient had a beautiful and immediate response 🫶 ..... and this is why I love my job 😊

A picture paints a thousand words....
Postural pictures for this patient from left to right session 1, session 2, and 3rd session today.

This patient attended with neck pain, something he explained he has suffered with on and off for 20yrs. He put it down to a bad rubgy tackle that he never seemed to fully recover from. However, upon testing his compensation pattern, we established that he is a bilateral Jaw driver. Which in simple terms means, when he is weak in the hip and pelvic area, his leg muscles shorten and tighten to work with the Jaw and neck muscles which also shorten and tighten to help compensate and power the hips. This forces his body to compress, which, over the years took its toll on his posture, as seen in the 1st picture pulling his neck and shoulders forward resulting in the ongoing intermittent neck pain he complains of.

He had session 3 today, where I worked on his upper body for the first time with the beactivated approach. He had some beautiful visual shifts in his posture, and he also felt very different. One of the things he verbalised at the end of the session was that his neck felt about 4 inches longer.

Our bodies slowly adapt to negative postural changes, and we don't realise how much space we are losing. It's normally pain that eventually prompts people to go to physio. But don't wait for pain to prompt you. If you feel your posture is worsening, get help, the sooner the better.
