👶Helping Children Build Core Strength Through Play

A strong core plays an important role in your child’s everyday movement. It helps support balance, posture, coordination and gives children a stable base for activities such as sitting, crawling, standing, walking and playing. 💛

👉 The good news? Building core strength doesn’t have to feel like exercise! Children develop these muscles naturally through movement and age-appropriate play.

📍Simple activities can include:

▪️ Reaching for toys in different directions
▪️ Tummy time and floor play
▪️ Crawling through tunnels or over soft cushions
▪️ Sitting and playing on the floor
▪️ Climbing and balancing activities
▪️ Throwing and catching a ball
▪️ Animal walks and playful movement for older children

Making activities fun and engaging encourages children to move, explore and build strength naturally.

👉 If your child struggles with balance, posture, sitting or other movement skills, paediatric physiotherapy can help identify areas where they may need some additional support and provide exercises suited to their individual stage of development.

👶 Physiotherapy to Support Early Sitting Skills

Learning to sit independently is an important milestone in your baby’s development and every little one reaches it at their own pace. 🤍

Paediatric physiotherapy can gently support babies as they develop the strength, balance and coordination needed for sitting. Through age-appropriate exercises and play, we can help encourage:

▪︎ Core and trunk strength
▪︎ Better balance and stability
▪︎ Head and postural control
▪︎ Coordination and body awareness
▪︎ Confidence in exploring new positions

Physiotherapy can also help identify movement patterns or areas where your baby may need a little extra support.

If you have concerns about your baby’s development or would simply like professional guidance on how to support their next milestone, we’re here to help 💛 !

📍What Is Increased Muscle Tone?
Increased muscle tone (also known as ) means that a child's muscles are tighter or stiffer than expected. This can make certain movements more difficult and may affect how a baby or child develops motor skills.

📍 Some signs may include:
• Stiff arms or legs
• Difficulty moving freely
• Frequent arching of the back
• Keeping hands tightly clenched
• Delays in reaching motor milestones

Not every baby with increased muscle tone will have a serious problem, but if you notice any of these signs, it's worth seeking professional advice.

💙 Early assessment by a physiotherapist can help identify any concerns and provide the right support for your child's development.

📍Every Child Develops at Their Own Pace - What Does That Really Mean?

Parents often compare their child's development to that of other children the same age. However, it's important to remember that every child develops individually and may reach developmental milestones at slightly different times.

Some children learn to sit, crawl, or walk earlier, while others simply need a little more time. This doesn't necessarily indicate a problem - what matters most is that development progresses steadily and appropriately.

If you have concerns about your child's motor development, a consultation with a physiotherapist can provide reassurance, guidance, and early support if needed.

💙 Early assessment and the right support can make a big difference in helping your child reach their full potential.

Walking on – Normal or a Sign to Seek Advice?
Many young children walk on their tiptoes from time to time, especially when they are learning to walk. In many cases, this is a normal part of development and improves naturally as they grow.

However, if tiptoe walking continues beyond the age of 2–3 years, happens most of the time, or is accompanied by stiffness, balance difficulties, or delayed motor milestones, it may be worth discussing with a paediatric physiotherapist.

Early assessment can help identify whether support is needed and provide parents with reassurance and guidance.

If you have any concerns about your child's movement or development, we're here to help.
