When i did my coaching course, this was one of the things that came up as most said to people grieving.
This was said to me, and I even said it when people didn't know what to say to me. "As least he's no longer suffering"... another well worn phrase.
Now, people mean no harm, and we struggle to speak openly about grief, and that is why we hear and say these platitudes, I would have rather someone said to me, tell me about your favourite story with your dad. What's the best memory you have of him. He seemed such a good guy (he was the best)
My da, he loved a laugh, he was a typical Dub, he told stories that went on for an age with more detail than was required, he had a joke about everything and a name for most people, and a way of impersonating people that would make you laugh till you cried.
So when speaking with someone grieving, do them a service and listen and hold space for them, to not think of the suffering that there loved one is no longer enduring.
