We tend to think of repetition as a habit to break. Psychoanalysis sees it differently, as something trying to be heard. What we can't yet put into words, we often find ourselves living out again.

If you recognise a pattern you can't seem to step out of, Psychotherapy Dublin offers psychoanalytic psychotherapy at 28 Merrion Square North, Dublin 2.

Theatre recommendation: Roots in Every Room by Anna D
15–18 July, Project Arts Centre

What gets passed down doesn’t arrive as memory. It arrives as repetition: in the body, in the choices we don’t remember choosing.

Anna D’s solo performance sits with what is inherited across generations: not just stories, but structures. What a family doesn’t say is often what a child ends up living out.

Worth seeing if you’re interested in how the past keeps showing up, uninvited, in the present.

We tend to treat the habit, the row we keep having, the choice we keep making as a problem of discipline — try harder, want it more, finally break the pattern.

But the pattern usually isn’t asking to be broken. It’s asking to be understood. The same argument returns because it hasn’t yet finished saying what it came to say. Once you hear that, it tends to lose its grip on its own.

That listening is what the work here is.

🌱 Taking the First Step 🌱
Sometimes the hardest part of therapy isn't the work itself, it's simply reaching out.
If you've been thinking about starting therapy, know that it's okay to take your time. There's no "perfect" moment, no requirement that things must be "bad enough." Your mental health and wellbeing matter, and seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
At Psychotherapy Dublin, we provide a safe, confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, process difficult emotions, and develop tools for a healthier, more fulfilling life.
Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or simply feeling stuck, we're here to support you on your journey.
