Irish Hospice Foundation was proud to host a stand and present our Dying Well at Home programme at the "Addressing Invisibility in LGBTQIA+ Health and Social Care" Conference at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, organised by LGBT Ireland.

We were there to share information about our eLearning programme, Information and Support Line, Toolkit and advance care planning resources and highlight the importance of ensuring LGBTQIA+ people feel seen, heard, as well as respected at end of life.

Our own Amber Connell, Healthcare Administrator, said: “Supporting good end of life care is important for everyone, and that means making sure LGBTQIA+ people feel seen, heard and respected too. Things like advance care planning can make a real difference: helping all to have their wishes known and their loved ones recognised, no matter what. It was brilliant to be part of this conversation and share our resources and people there were so eager to learn more"

This Pride, let's talk about something we don't always say out loud. For LGBTQIA+ people, these days mean celebrations of so many different experiences of life. But Irish Hospice Foundation's Public Engagement Lead, Valerie Smith, hears one fear again and again: going back into the closet as q***r people age, face illness, or approach death.

That fear is valid. However, in Ireland, there is reassuring news: new legislation is in place to protect your voice, wishes, and decisions for the future, even if a time comes when LGBTQIA+ individuals are unable to speak for themselves.

That's why Irish Hospice Foundation, working with LGBT+ leaders and organisations, created Ember: a guide to end-of-life planning, care and bereavement.

Father’s Day can be a tender day for many — filled with love, memory, and longing.

This , we’re sharing words by Sara Rian that gently acknowledge the weight this day can carry for those whose hearts are missing a father, or who are grieving someone they love. 🌿💛

There is no one way to move through today. Whether it’s quiet reflection, tears, or remembering in small, meaningful ways — all of it is valid.
Love doesn’t end with loss. It continues in how we remember, honour, and carry them with us.
If today feels heavy, please be gentle with yourself. You are allowed to grieve, to remember, and to love — all in your own time and in your own way.

Death is often called “the great leveller”, but grief isn’t, as our family, social, cultural and financial backgrounds all shape how we experience dying, death and bereavement, and whether we get the support we need when it matters most.

This year, Irish Hospice Foundation marks 40 years of impact with our End-of-Life Forum, taking place on 24 September at Croke Park.

Orla Keegan, our Director of Bereavement and Education and Honorary Lecturer at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland explains why this conversation matters: “Our backgrounds can end up advantaging or disadvantaging us in how we grieve. At the Forum, we’ll explore some of these narratives and look at how we can best support dying and grieving in a rapidly changing Ireland”.

Irish Hospice Foundation is commissioning a comprehensive literature review of national and international models for Advance Healthcare Directive (AHD) Registers: examining how they are defined, implemented, as well as governed across different jurisdictions.

This research will directly inform IHF's advocacy for the establishment of an AHD Register in Ireland, ensuring people's end-of-life wishes are documented and accessible when it matters most.
