Edenderry coarse angling club

Nine permanent match stretches occupy the length of the Grand Canal within 15 km of Edenderry town. Each stretch is permanently marked and contains a minimum of 25 pegs, spaced at 30 metre intervals. The towpaths are driveable and adjacent car parking facilities are provided. The towpaths, like the canal itself, are maintained to the highest standard by Waterways Ir

eland and Edenderry coarse angling club, while the angling conditions are beyond parallel. A vast number of mixed coarse fish have been stocked into the canal over the past ten years - the health and population status of which is regularly assessed. Apart from the 262 permanent swims that have been created for the match angler on this unique fishery, a number of stretches have been prepared to cater for the pleasure fisherman and the junior angler. Included among these is the famous Edenderry Branch Line. Fished 12 months a year, this highly productive venue regularly produces catches in excess of 50lb per session. Bream, tench, roach, rudd, hybrids, carp, perch and gudgeon are the principal fish species present. Over the past decade the Grand Canal at Edenderry has played host to a large number of prestigious international, national, provincial and local angling festivals. Because of the superb bank-side facilities, the large and diverse fish stock and the wide range of managed match stretches, Edenderry had been the venue of choice for many major angling events in Ireland. Each year the Edenderry Coarse Angling Club (CAC) stages two major festivals on the canal. These are the Guinness Solo three-day Festival in June and the two day Edenderry ADC Coarse Angling Festival in August. They have also hosted the senior canal all-Ireland and hosted the interprovincials in 2010 and 2013. The Canal
The Grand Canal in the Edenderry area is between 13 and 16 m wide and averages 1.7 m deep. Depths to 2 m are available in the section between Downshire Bridge and Lock 20. The water is normally coloured and is generally static or very slow flowing. The canal corridor supports a wide diversity of aquatic and marginal plants that harbour myriads of fish-food insects. This may explain the large quantity of plump fish that is resident in the canal. The vegitation is carefully managed by Waterways Ireland and does not pose an obstruction for anglers. Boat traffic density along the canal is low.

The 30th FIPSed European Coarse Angling Championship will take place in the Cavan Lakelands on 27th & 28th June 2026, bringing together the finest float anglers from across Europe. Hosted by the NCFFI in partnership with Cavan County Council and Inland Fisheries Ireland, whose support, together with the cooperation of local landowners, is vital to the success of the championship.

The prestigious event brings together Europe's leading national teams in the float fishing discipline, creating one of the strongest international fields ever assembled in the region.

The championship provides a unique opportunity to showcase the outstanding waters of the Cavan Lakelands to an international audience. The event will highlight not only the quality of the region's fisheries, but also its rich angling heritage, spectacular scenery and reputation as one of Europe's premier destinations for wild coarse fishing.

The main competition will take place across two renowned venues, with sections at Eonish Shore on Lough Oughter and Corfree, Lough Gowna, on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June 2026. However, the championship atmosphere will begin much earlier, with teams arriving in the region from Sunday 21st June to undertake official training and preparation.

The championship headquarters will be based in Killeshandra, which will host the official welcome to the competing nations. At 6.00pm on Monday 22nd June, teams will parade through the town's Main Street before attending the Official Opening Ceremony at the Killeshandra Community Hall.

Beyond the competition itself, the event will provide an opportunity to showcase the Cavan Lakelands to an international audience while generating significant economic benefits for the local area through visiting teams, officials, supporters and media.

The three day festival concluded yesterday and what a week it was, the weather threw everything at the anglers and reports of some sections being broken in the winds. One man came to the fore as he has done over the years, he won it in 2023 and in 2024. He had an unbelievable net to start the festival on the Monday with the scales going 27lb 12oz, and he was always going to be hard peg back. he put 5lb Wednesday and finished off his match on Friday with 7-06 to give him a total of 40lb 2oz to win the festival for a third time . That man was Gal Charnock and what an angler, his dad Paul and brother Gavin have been travelling over for years supporting the club, so thanks a million lads. Karl Unwin and Tony Richardson both filled the top two spots on the 2 day festival, and were on the podium again for the three day with Tony taking second place and Karl third. Phil Walterโ€™s and Derek Wane were fourth and fifth overall.
