If you’re a parent or carer and you have worries about Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), reaching out can feel like a big step. Our team at FASD Hub Ireland is here to talk things through without pressure or judgement.

When parents and carers call us, they often start with questions like:

“I don’t know where to start or who to talk to.”

“How can I support my child at home or in school?”

“I’m not sure if what I’m seeing is something to be concerned about, can I talk it through?”

You don’t need a diagnosis or the ‘right words’. You just need to reach out.

We continually challenge why the responsibility for prevention of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is still placed almost entirely on women.

For decades, public health messaging in Ireland has focused on maternal alcohol use, yet there is little to no visible national messaging from the HSE or the Department for Health about a Father’s responsibility before conception, despite growing evidence that paternal alcohol use matters.

Science now tells us that alcohol can affect s***m health in the 90 days before conception, with potential lifelong impacts for a child. And still, men are largely absent from prevention campaigns.
Prevention cannot rest on one parent alone.

Shared responsibility means shared information and support.

This is not about blame - it’s about equity, awareness, and better outcomes for children. No parent sets out to harm their baby.

If you believe men deserve clear, evidence based guidance too, please share this message.
Awareness only works if it reaches everyone.
