A morning out of the office, and plenty of inspiration to bring back!

Today we took a few hours away from the clinic to join Local Enterprise Office Wexford for its Women in Business event at the Amber Springs Hotel in Gorey.

With MC (Beat FM’s )Shonagh Lyons keeping the conversation flowing, we heard from inspiring businesswomen including keynote speaker Mel Galavan (Mrs Smart Money) and Aisling Hurley, with contributions from Cathaoirleach Cllr Lisa McDonald.

Running a business brings plenty of rewards and challenges, and there’s something lovely about stepping back, sharing experiences and learning from other women on that same journey.

Thank you to everyone involved for a morning of encouragement, connection and women supporting women. 💜

Then it was back to the clinic — with a little extra spring in our step!

Making Sense of Sounds!

When you are a beekeeper, you want to know whether your bees are happy or angry before you approach the beehive 🐝🐝 most beekeepers can judge this by the sound of the bees.

My clients hearing loss meant that this was becoming more and more difficult.

Since being fitted with hearing aids they spent a summer happily collecting honey and very kindly brought me in some delicious honey to taste 🍯

Hearing loss can affect people in so many different ways and in this case, was hindering someone from enjoying a hobby.

At Doyle Hearing Solutions…… the emphasis is always on trying to find solutions for the person with hearing loss.
A successful outcome for my clients.

A great day last Saturday at the ISHAA education day at , where we were very well looked after by the hotel team.
The Key note speaker Dr Keith Darrow who spoke at length about the ongoing acknowledged connection between Hearing Loss and Dementia, and the value Hearing Aids can bring to mitigate this risk factor. A Very engaging and informative speaker.
Another speaker Bethany Samra from , spoke around the value of Brain Hearing and putting exact hearing in context, rather than guessing what is being said or your brain trying to fill in the gaps.

It was a day of learning new things, being reminded of existing challenges, seeing what new technologies are coming both for me as a Clinician but also in hearing aid advances.

I am also very happy to be staying on in my role of Vice President of ISHAA (Irish Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists) for another year, helping to uphold and promote best practices within the industry.

We had a few calls after our last post asking, “What exactly is a hearing aid dryer?” So I thought I’d explain!

Hearing aids spend all day in a warm ear canal, where moisture and perspiration can build up. That moisture can cause all sorts of mischief, from hearing aids cutting in and out to corrosion of their internal components. The heat and humidity this past summer made it a particular problem for some people.

Thankfully, there are a few simple ways to help:

• An electric drybox that holds the whole charging unit, with the hearing aids in place. Very handy if you want drying and charging taken care of together.

• A drybox that runs a separate drying cycle. Once the cycle finishes, you’ll need to remember to put your hearing aids on charge.

• A drying tub with a desiccant tablet. This has been around for years and is best suited to hearing aids with disposable batteries, as the aids can stay in the tub overnight.

If moisture has been causing trouble with your hearing aids, one of these could be well worth considering. A little care can help keep them working at their best.

Tips for taking good care of your hearing aids:

• When you're not wearing your hearing aids, they should be in the charger. Avoid placing them in a tissue to put away later……this is how they get lost!!
• Check for moisture and dry your hearing aids in an airy place or in a
hearing aid dryer, which is invaluable for anyone who suffers with high body temperature and perspiration.
• Remove your hearing aids before applying cosmetic products, especially hair spray or bryl cream / gel. These products can clog up those small microphone inlets.
• Wipe your hearing aids daily with a dry cloth or tissue, and brush away any visible wax or dry skin.......Avoid water!!!
• Change the filters regularly as these will completely stop the sound coming through.
• Remove your hearing aids before you take a shower or go swimming

Following these tips will ensure you get the optimal use of your hearing
aids, and can help extend the life span.

I’m absolutely delighted to see HIQA are considering the possibility of making a second cochlear implant available to people who need one. For someone living with profound hearing loss—often feeling isolated and cut off from conversation and the world around them—the difference could be life-changing, bringing better access to sound, communication, connection and independence. This would be a hugely positive and long-overdue development.

We have started an assessment of cochlear implants for adults: https://www.hiqa.ie/reports-and-publications/health-technology-assessment/cochlear-implants-adults-health-technology

Current funding for cochlear implants in adults is limited to one implant for those with severe-to-profound hearing loss in both ears, and doesn’t include adults with single-sided deafness.

We are going to be looking at the clinical and cost effectiveness of expanding the funding criteria, so that more adults with hearing loss could have the option of getting a cochlear implant.
