It is a test by an audiologist to evaluate your hearing and determine whether you have hearing loss and in what part of your ear the problem is.
The hearing test usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes.
When you arrive at your appointment, the audiologist will guide you through 6 steps.
1️⃣ Hearing history.
In our initial consultation, you will fill out a questionnaire about your hearing health and any hearing problems. This gives the audiologist information on your situation and needs, which you’ll discuss during your appointment.
2️⃣ Visual exam of the external ear canal (otoscopy)
Your external ear canal and tympanic membrane (eardrum) are checked to make sure there aren’t any issues or blockages (such as impacted wax) that will prevent you from taking a hearing test
3️⃣ Middle ear check.
This automatic test called an impedance analysis, evaluates how well your middle ear is working.
The audiologist uses a probe to measure and verify the eardrum movement, the ossicle chain and the acoustic reflex.
4️⃣ Audiometric hearing test.
This part of the test measures the quietest sounds you can hear (from deep and low sounds to high and sharp sounds).
Different types and volumes of sounds will be played, and you will signal when you hear them.
5️⃣ Word recognition.
After the sound detection tests, the audiologist will have you listen to and repeat a series of words.
We assess your ability to understand words at a normal volume and find out the lowest level at which you can hear and repeat familiar words.
6️⃣ Results and recommendations.
After the tests, your audiologist will explain your results and connect them to the problems you reported at the beginning of the session.
Based on your results, the audiologist may recommend a specialist referral or advise if hearing aids will benefit you.
For many people who have normal hearing we recommend a regular re-test to monitor your hearing progression.
