Art helps with stress, anxiety, and overwhelm because it gives your mind a break from constant thinking. When you create, your attention shifts from worries about the past or future into the present moment. Colours, shapes, and creative expression provide a safe way to release emotions that can be difficult to put into words.

Research shows that making art can calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and improve wellbeing. You don’t need artistic skill to benefit—it’s the process, not the finished piece, that matters. Art creates space to slow down, express feelings, and reconnect with yourself when life feels overwhelming.

The experience can be even more powerful in a group led by a professional art therapist. Being creative alongside others helps reduce feelings of isolation and reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles. A trained art therapist creates a safe, supportive environment and gently guides the process, helping participants explore emotions, gain insights, and build healthy coping skills. The combination of creative expression, professional support, and meaningful connection can be deeply healing, offering both relief in the moment and lasting tools for emotional wellbeing.

If this resonates with you, you are welcome to join Art therapy and EFT ( tapping) group that starts on 6/6/26 on a farm in Oughterard area. You will be surrounded by beautiful, grounding and regulating nature 🐑🌳🌷🪻

Bilateral painting that combines haptic touch and the sensory experience of creaming paint onto the hands can be deeply regulating, grounding, and therapeutic. Using both hands together engages both sides of the body and brain, supporting integration, coordination, focus, and emotional processing. The rhythmic, repetitive movement can help calm the nervous system and promote a sense of balance and presence.

The haptic experience of feeling paint directly on the skin invites sensory awareness and encourages people to reconnect with their bodies in a gentle, non-verbal way. Slowly massaging or “creaming” paint onto the hands can evoke feelings of care, comfort, and self-soothing, while also stimulating sensory pathways linked to relaxation and emotional regulation.

This process can be especially supportive for people experiencing anxiety, stress, trauma, dementia, or social disconnection, as it offers a playful and expressive experience that does not rely on words. The combination of touch, movement, colour, and creativity can enhance emotional expression, increase feelings of connection and safety, and foster curiosity, enjoyment, and wellbeing.

Doodling is more than just absent-minded drawing — it can be a simple and powerful way to support wellbeing. The repetitive movement of drawing shapes, lines, or patterns can help calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and improve focus. Doodling also encourages creativity without pressure or perfection, making it an accessible form of self-expression for anyone.

Research suggests that doodling can improve concentration and memory by keeping the mind gently engaged. It can also help process emotions, spark new ideas, and create moments of mindfulness in busy daily life. Most importantly, doodling invites playfulness and curiosity — qualities that support emotional balance and mental wellbeing.

When you engage in art, you’re not just using one part of your brain—you’re activating many at once. The emotional centres process feelings, the sensory areas respond to colour and texture, the motor cortex guides your hands, and the prefrontal cortex supports decision-making and focus.

This kind of whole-brain activation helps strengthen connections between different regions, improving flexibility, resilience, and overall brain health.

It’s not about making something perfect—it’s about giving your brain a rich, integrated experience that supports how you think, feel, and regulate.
