🌍 Join the Global Walk Against Pain on Saturday 29th August 2026 🌍

We are really excited to share that the Centre for Pain Research, PainNet ENLIGHT European University Network, and parkrun at University of Galway are joining forces to host a local event for the Global Walk Against Pain.

The Global Walk Against Pain brings people together around the world to raise awareness of chronic pain and highlight the fact that pain is often invisible.

📍 Location: University of Galway park and ride

🕘 Arrive and check-in: 9:15am

🚶 Walk starts: 9:30am sharp

👣 Distance and pace: Walk as little or as much as you like, up to 5 km, at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

🧁 There will also be light refreshments after the walk.

💭 Before or after the walk, come talk to us at our Centre for Pain Research stand to meet with our researchers, and to learn more about chronic pain and our research.

📢 We are looking for participants with 𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 to take part in a clinical research study at the University of Galway!

⚡ This study investigates how 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗲𝘀 (e.g. automatically pulling your hand away from touching a hot stove) might predict low back pain outcomes.

✅ If you have current 𝗮𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗲 low back pain for at least 48 hours OR have ongoing 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 low back pain (more than 3 months), you may be eligible.

- people living with 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 (𝗜𝗕𝗗)
- people living with 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲 (IBS)
- and pain-free 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 people

This study investigates how the body’s "cannabis-like" 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 🧠🌿, 𝗴𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗲𝘀 🦠, and 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆⚡compare between people living with IBD or IBS who experience abdominal pain, versus those who do not.

There are 4 main features of the iCanCope PostOp Smartphone App - Check-in, Trends, Goals and The Library.

Here is a brief explanation of the Check-In feature:

Checking-in on the app consists of rating how you are recovering in 5 domains; Pain, Movement, Mood, Worry and Sleep.

Completing daily/weekly check-ins is how the app knows how the user's recovery is going and what they might need a little help with.

Based on these scores, the app will suggest articles from the app library - e.g. if someone registers as having severe pain after surgery, the app might recommend an article about psychological approaches to pain management.

The iCanCope PostOp study is still recruiting teens (12 - 18yrs) who will be having spinal fusion or limb reconstruction surgery in the coming weeks/months.

This study is testing the effectiveness of the iCanCope PostOp smartphone app.

The hope is that the app will reduce anxiety and pain before and after surgey - but we still need to test it!
