☘️💚☘️Rest is not a luxury. Sometimes it is nervous system maintenance 🧠 Some people notice more. The change in a voice, the atmosphere in a room, a shift in someone’s mood. What was said & what was not. When you process deeply, you can end up carrying far more information than you realise & then comes the work of sorting it: Is this mine? Is this theirs? Do I need to respond? Do I need to do anything at all? That takes energy. So, if you sometimes need quiet after being around people, it does not necessarily mean you are antisocial, withdrawn or “too sensitive.” Your system may simply need time to process what it has taken in. You do not have to process everything you notice. You do not have to carry everything you feel.
And you do not have to be available for everything around you. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is step away - & let yourself settle. ☘️💚☘️

☘️💚☘️We are taught that always putting others first is a virtue. But as Anaïs Nin beautifully notes, sometimes over-giving is not a virtue at all-it is a disguise. When we secretly believe our own needs are a burden, we wear the shield of hyper-generosity because it feels much safer to be needed than to be vulnerable. In psychotherapy, we call this hyper-independence. According to evidence-based Schema Therapy research, people who grow up with unmet emotional needs often develop a “Self-Sacrifice schema.” You subconsciously believe you must “earn” your place in relationships by being useful, while completely burying your own pain. If you are always the caregiver, ask yourself today, is your generosity coming from a place of true abundance, or is it a subconscious shield to keep people from seeing that you are struggling too? I want to remind you that you do not have to be useful to be loved. Your needs matter just as much as everyone else’s, & learning to let people support you back is a beautiful part of healing. Breathe & know that it is safe to let people care for you too. ☘️💚☘️

☘️💚☘️Before we ever learned to regulate ourselves, regulation was something we received from another person. Self-regulation is the ability to settle, feel safe, and come back to balance when life or our emotions become overwhelming. Research suggests that our capacity for regulation develops through relationship, through touch, voice, responsiveness, and the presence of another person, often before we are consciously aware of it. Some people have a naturally regulating presence. Music can have a regulating presence. Art can have a regulating presence. Creativity can regulate us - whether we are creating something ourselves or experiencing the creativity of others. What we create can also evoke feelings in others, sometimes helping them feel safe, grounded, and regulated. “I don’t know why, but I feel better around them”.
“I don’t know why, but this music makes me feel good”.
“I don’t know why but looking at art changes something in me.” You do not always have to understand it. Sometimes knowing you feel better is enough. ☘️💚☘️

☘️💚☘️What happened to you? For many people, the question they have carried for years is: “What is wrong with me?” Why am I so sensitive? Why do I struggle when others seem to cope? Why do I feel like I’m not enough? What if we asked a different question? What happened to you that made you believe something was wrong with you? Shame is painful because it doesn’t say: “I made a mistake.” It says: “There is something wrong with me.” That critical voice inside us usually did not appear from nowhere. It may have developed through experiences where we felt criticised, misunderstood, rejected, or like parts of ourselves were too much or not enough. For many people who have spent years feeling different or unseen, shame can become a heavy burden. Healing is not about pretending everything is fine or forcing yourself to love every part of yourself straight away. Someone drowning in shame often cannot jump straight into love. They might begin with curiosity. Because curiosity is a much kinder bridge. Instead of: “What is wrong with me?” Try: “Where did I learn to believe this about myself?”, “What am I carrying?”, “What do I need right now?”, Do not bypass the pain. Understand it. Self-acceptance begins when we stop fighting against ourselves & start listening to ourselves. The opposite of shame is not perfection. It is compassion & recognising that you are human. ☘️💚☘️

☘️💚☘️ We often don’t realise the impact we have on others. Simple conversations, kind words, moments of understanding,or just being fully present can stay with someone far longer than we imagine. From a psychological perspective, the nervous system is constantly scanning for cues of safety & connection. When someone feels seen or understood, even briefly, their system can shift out of threat & into regulation-a felt sense of safety in the body. That moment can be stored internally & become something they can draw on later, especially for someone who hasn’t had much of that. What feels small to us can become something a person returns to later: a memory that softens shame, interrupts isolation, or reminds them that connection is possible. ☘️🧚☘️

☘️🧚☘️People relate to us through their own wounds, fears, expectations & capacity for love-not through our worth. Some people cannot receive love consistently, even when it is freely given. Others remain steady in their care through conflict, distance, & imperfection. The painful part is trying to earn love from those who cannot give it. The healing part is recognising love that is not based on performance. In therapy, this is often understood through attachment theory & person-centred psychology-how early relational experiences shape our sense of love, safety & worth, & how we learn the difference between conditional (love that feels like it depends on how you behave, perform, or meet expectations), & unconditional regard (love that stays steady even when things are difficult, imperfect, or messy). The deeper truth is this: your value is not defined by either, not by rejection, & not by devotion. Love is not always logical, controllable, or earned. ☘️🧚☘️

☘️💚☘️Being called ‘too sensitive’ is often a misunderstanding of how your nervous system works. For people with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, research shows differences in how the brain regulates attention and emotion. The nervous system can react quickly, and feelings can land strongly. Some people also experience Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria-where even small moments of perceived rejection can feel intense. This is not weakness. It’s a different nervous system pattern. Modern neuroscience shows ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition involving differences in brain networks linked to regulation and response-not personality flaws. You don’t need to be less sensitive. You need understanding. Sensitivity isn’t the problem.Misunderstanding is. ☘️🧚☘️

☘️💚☘️Needing attention is normal-it often reflects early attachment patterns & a nervous system that has not felt fully safe. It might show up as: agreeing with others when it does not feel right, over-explaining yourself, doing things to impress rather than because they matter to you. Holding yourself with respect means noticing what you feel, speaking your truth, & acting in line with your values-honesty, kindness, fairness, or courage.Practical ways to do this include:pausing before reacting to notice what you feel, setting boundaries that protect your energy, choosing actions that reflect your values, not someone else’s approval, listening to your body’s needs for calm, rest, or movement. Self-respect grows from within, not from others’ approval. It takes practice, and it lasts 🧚‍♂️☘️

☘️💚☘️Connection+Tribe+Belonging=Irish= St. Patrick’s Day. ☘️A reminder for us all that humans are biopsychosocial beings. We thrive when we are seen, valued, & part of a community. Belonging isn’t optional-it’s essential for our mental, emotional, & physical health. Ever feel like you’re not “one” with a group, that you don’t truly belong? You’re not broken. This is normal. Psychologists have shown that social exclusion activates the same neural pathways as physical pain-your brain is wired to notice when you’re disconnected. It’s your signal: you need your tribe☘️Call it a tribe, network, clan, or family.Whatever you call it, & whoever you are, you need one-in whatever way works for you. Sharing laughs, stories, or quiet moments with your people grounds you, strengthens you, and makes life richer. This St. Patrick’s Day, remember:The luckiest shamrocks aren’t on the ground-they’re the connections we hold close.☘️Show up for your people☘️Let them show up for you. ☘️🧚‍♂️

☘️💚☘️Ever feel drained after leaving someone’s presence or catch yourself leaving them drained? We’re sensory beings-our bodies pick up tension, moods, & emotions before our minds even notice. Energy transfer isn’t just physics-it happens in words, actions, presence, & emotions. Your nervous system picks up tension and moods thanks to mirror neurons & physiological resonance-when your body subtly syncs with others. Even a hug, a kiss, or a conversation can lift you or drain you. Notice how you feel after interactions, if your good feelings have changed . If you leave tense, uneasy, or exhausted, that’s a signal their energy got in-or you absorbed some of it. Simply noticing it’s theirs is enough to start letting it go & reconnect with what’s yours. We all give off energy-sometimes uplifting, sometimes tense or negative & just like you can absorb others’ energy, you can influence theirs too.Your energy is sacred, & your body is too. Notice. Protect your energy. Keep what’s yours. This is how clarity and calm show up in life-in intimacy, relationships, & within yourself. 🧚‍♂️
