This mare has been with me a few times over the past year. A beautiful mare, comes across very maternal and a pleasure to work with.
However as with any animal when pain or dysfunction comes into play their easy attitude can change. For this lady she just said no, I can't do that right now. Which for her meant putting in a stop. Everything else stayed the same. Her manners, her softness on the ground. The owners noted nothing else had changed and that she had been fine the previous week. However repetitive strain doesn't appear over night. It's a build up of a pattern that over "TIME" becomes less and less pliable. So we get to the place of "the straw that broke the camels back". One last glitch in the system and the system becomes redundant. So in this clip and the shorter aside I show how we can easily assess if there is dysfunction brewing.
Just by picking up the hind limb. If it feels heavy in your hand when you go pick out their feet. Or they are reluctant to lift it or drop it out of your hand abruptly then you've most likely got a problem. Nothing with horse should be difficult. They're pretty easy going and I've worked with a lot over the years. I've seen it all and I'm yet to be convinced that they are anything but misunderstood. They're a super polite animal who can only communicate with us through behavior and body language. So let's listen deeper with our hearts and we'll hear when they're not feeling 100% 🦄❤️

I see this dysfunction regularly and it's something an owner can easily feel once they know what they're feeling for.
When you go to pick up your horse's hind leg it should spring up lightly in your hand. If it doesn't your horse most probably has a pelvic dysfunction resulting in a flexed "shortened" hind leg.
They will often struggle on the opposite front lead and usually prefer to shorten rather then extend out their stride. Horses are wonderful at creating compensation patterns so you may not yet feel a ridden symptom yet. But it will come over time as other compensation patterns become more rigid.
The body cannot stay out of alignment forever. Eventually the structures will start to give out.
If you recognise this feel from you horse let me know. Be interesting to see what else you notice and if it all aligns.

I recently received this feedback from a remote horse clients owner.
My main concern, as per the owner information, was that he was head shy.
Although performing well she asked me to check into his emotional body also.
I have worked with this beautiful horse before when he was at another yard. It was here I met and developed a relationship with his owner.
I worked on Knights cranial system as a priority, releasing all sutures around the ears and working with the PRM until it increased to a healthy rate.
He also brought my awareness to his pelvis and some others challenges he was feeling in his body.

He's since performed at Mullingar EQ and both rider and owner were delighted with his noticeable changes. Additionally he's relaxed now when being clipped at the head, which had since become an issue for him. horsephysio
