This mare has been with me a few times over the past year. A beautiful mare, comes across very maternal and a pleasure to work with.
However as with any animal when pain or dysfunction comes into play their easy attitude can change. For this lady she just said no, I can't do that right now. Which for her meant putting in a stop. Everything else stayed the same. Her manners, her softness on the ground. The owners noted nothing else had changed and that she had been fine the previous week. However repetitive strain doesn't appear over night. It's a build up of a pattern that over "TIME" becomes less and less pliable. So we get to the place of "the straw that broke the camels back". One last glitch in the system and the system becomes redundant. So in this clip and the shorter aside I show how we can easily assess if there is dysfunction brewing.
Just by picking up the hind limb. If it feels heavy in your hand when you go pick out their feet. Or they are reluctant to lift it or drop it out of your hand abruptly then you've most likely got a problem. Nothing with horse should be difficult. They're pretty easy going and I've worked with a lot over the years. I've seen it all and I'm yet to be convinced that they are anything but misunderstood. They're a super polite animal who can only communicate with us through behavior and body language. So let's listen deeper with our hearts and we'll hear when they're not feeling 100% 🦄❤️
