Athlete Monitoring: Periodisation to Performance

Thanks to Kate Maher for allowing me to share her performance monitoring data from the past year.

Over the past year, Kate’s Countermovement Jump (CMJ) improved from 30.2 cm to 49.9 cm, while RSI-mod increased from 0.24 to 0.74 m/s.

The CMJ is one component of our monitoring battery. Beyond jump height, its force–time characteristics reflect concentric force production, stretch-shortening cycle efficiency, eccentric absorption, and neuromuscular readiness. Alongside track performance, training load, and clinical observations, these measures help individualise programming for the athlete and the demands of the 200/400 m.

As coaches, it’s easy to focus on sessions. The key question is whether the athlete is adapting as intended.

Kate’s data clearly reflects periodisation and peaking. During the preparation phase, both CMJ and RSI-mod improved as physical qualities developed. As racing and PBs accumulated, both dipped slightly—an expected response to competition fatigue rather than a loss of fitness.

After a planned taper, CMJ (49.9 cm) and RSI-mod (0.74 m/s) returned to peak levels ahead of the World Athletics U20 Championships.

No test can predict race performance, but when monitoring aligns with the training process, it increases confidence that the athlete is prepared to perform.

Periodisation is not about chasing gym PRs—it’s about developing the right qualities, maintaining them across the season, and peaking when it matters most.

The work is done. The preparation is complete.

Good luck, Kate. 🇮🇪💚

ALTIS MSc – Planning for Performance- 3rd Residential 🎓

Another brilliant week of learning with some of the best coaches and practitioners in the world.

This residential focused on planning, periodisation and progressing training, with a strong emphasis on applying principles rather than following rigid programmes. Across the week we explored monitoring, tactical periodisation, conditioning, warm-up physiology, strength programming , LTAD and real-world case studies that challenged our coaching decisions.

Just as valuable was the opportunity to build relationships with an incredible group of coaches from around the world. Sharing ideas, challenging each other’s thinking, and expanding my network is one of the biggest strengths of the ALTIS MSc experience.

A huge thank you to Rich Clarke Matej Hocevar Jo Clubb | Sports Scientist Alan Murdoch Edward Baker & Simon for sharing their knowledge and experience.
Also Joana Calado for some great photos
One of my biggest takeaways:

Great coaching isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about making better decisions in front of the athlete.

Looking forward to putting these ideas into practice and continuing the journey with ALTIS LLC | Coach & Athlete Education

Back to work after an incredible few weeks of racing from these two talented athletes.

After finishing her Leaving Cert, produced another outstanding performance at Cork City Sports, securing her second World U20 800m qualifying standard and a new personal best. A brilliant reward for all the hard work, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she can produce on the world stage.

Kate Maher has faced more than her share of setbacks this season, but each challenge has only made her stronger. She is a fantastic role model for any young athlete. After the disappointment of narrowly missing selection for the European U18 Championships despite winning the National U18 title and achieving two qualifying standards, Kate responded in the best possible way. She put the disappointment behind her and ran a new personal best, achieved the fastest European qualifying standard run on Irish soil, and currently holds the fastest head-to-head performance among Ireland’s U18 400 m athletes.

This is only the beginning for both of these athletes. The resilience, commitment and character they’ve shown throughout the season are every bit as impressive as the performances themselves.
Excited to see what comes next. Well done to their coaches Noel Maher Fiona Norwood James Ledingham Niamh Richardson Noel Richardson
