A fantastic, fun-filled day was had yesterday at the Down Syndrome Centre Cork for our OT/SLT summer camps 🌞

Working in the centre and running these camps alongside like-minded professionals is incredibly rewarding. Our priority is always to ensure the children have as much fun as possible while supporting the development of core skills. Every activity is planned with purpose, and we continually ask ourselves, "Why are we doing this?" and "How is this activity beneficial, meaningful, and enjoyable?"

Our groups and this camp offer a wide variety of activities, including obstacle courses to support gross motor development, arts and crafts to develop fine motor skills, and the use of core communication boards and AAC devices to encourage language and communication development.

By ensuring every activity has a clear purpose while remaining engaging and enjoyable, we create opportunities for children to learn, grow, and build confidence through play. ✨️

Flexibility in practice is such an important skill. It is not about how much can be done within the time slot. It is about ensuring a child feels comfortable, heard and safe within the environment 🦋

Flexibility in practice is such an important thing! What will work for one child may be the complete opposite of what another child will need. It is less about worrying that everything has been covered in a session and more about the comfort and feeling of safety a child has in the space 🦋

🦋 Respecting fluctuations in a child’s capacity is important because it helps them feel safe, understood, and supported. A child’s ability to communicate, cope, and engage can change depending on how they are feeling, their regulation, or what is happening around them.

Being flexible and responsive to these changes helps meet the child where they are, especially when they feel overwhelmed. This builds trust, strengthens the relationship, and creates a safe space where the child feels comfortable enough to connect and grow.

🦋 Advocacy for children is more important now than ever. Every day, new stories emerge that remind us how many young people still face barriers to education, healthcare, and safety. These challenges are not temporary, and they cannot be solved through silence or complacency. Protecting and supporting children must remain an ongoing commitment that requires persistence, compassion, and collective action. We have to continue speaking up, raising awareness, and standing beside one another, because advocacy is strongest when communities work together. By supporting each other and refusing to look away, we create a stronger voice for children and help build a future where every child is valued, protected, and given the opportunity to thrive. 🦋

In sessions, it often comes up just how much teenagers miss these forms of movement. Many speak about activities like swinging, spinning, or bouncing as things they once loved, but felt they had to leave behind as they got older. Hearing this can be difficult, as there is often a real sense of loss in how they describe these experiences—something that once brought comfort, joy, and regulation now feels off-limits or “too childish.”

What stands out is how this shift has impacted their ability to cope. Without those familiar and effective ways of regulating their nervous system, some teenagers describe feeling more easily overwhelmed, especially in demanding environments like school. There can be a sense that something important has been taken away without a clear replacement.

It highlights how important it is to acknowledge and validate this loss, while also supporting teenagers in rediscovering or adapting ways to meet those same sensory needs in a way that feels acceptable to them now.
