Fitness starts with feet! What are we measuring on our gait scanner during your assessment? The foot roll: understanding the Dynamic Centre of Pressure👇

When we walk, the foot doesn't simply land and push off. The dynamic centre of pressure (CoP) travels through the foot in a very specific pathway revealing how forces are transferred from landing through to propulsion.

During a typical foot roll we see the following:

1. Initial contact( heel strike): The CoP begins at the posterolateral heel. This is where the body accepts load, absorbs impact and begins shock attenuation.

2. Loading response: As the foot moves to the ground, the CoP progresses forward and slightly medially through the heel. Controlled pronation allows the foot to become a flexible adaptor to the surface.

3. Midstance: The CoP progresses forward through the midfoot region. This is the transition phase where the body moves over the foot. Efficient load transfer at this stage is essential for balance and stability.

4. Terminal stance: The CoP advances into the medial forefoot towards the 1st metatarsal. The heel lifts and the foot becomes a rigid lever for push-off.

5. Propulsion (toe-off): The CoP finishes at the hallux (big toe). The force is directed into the ground to generate forward movement. The hallux and the first ray being contributors to efficient propulsion.

❗ Deviation from this pathway can result in:
Reduced shock absorption
Excessive or limited pronation
Forefoot overload
Hallux dysfunction
Compensation patterns higher up the kinetic chain affecting the lower leg, knee, hip, or back.

Using the Dynamic Foot scan we and you can visualise the pathway in real time. We can assess the speed of movement, where the load is going and how the floor is functioning dynamically during gait.

If you are suffering from foot or lower limb, book in our Gait and Motion assessment. Get to the bottom of why you're in pain and begin your journey to recovery.
