835684 RETIRED TROOPER TOMMY McCARTHY
The chair of the Peter Keenan Branch of Óglaigh na hÉireann, would like to thank all those that participated in the funeral of our friend and comrade Tommy McCarthy (Cool T) today. It was a wonderful send-off, carried out in a most efficient and professional manner, everyone involved played their part. To see so many of Tommy’s former comrades, involved just emphasizes the esteem he was held in by all. It was great to see and catch up with so many old friends there from our soldering days. May Cool T rest in peace.

835684 RETIRED TROOPER TOMMY McCARTHY
We were saddened to hear of the death of our friend and former comrade Tommy McCarthy, (Cool T) who passed away yesterday August 4th, after a short illness. He joined the army in 1976, after basic training he was posted to Finner Camp, shortly after he transferred to the 4th Motor Squadron in Longford. In Longford he qualified to drive all vehicles available to the Squadron. Tommy served with UNIFIL with the 55th and 57th Battalions in South Lebanon. Tommy was a wizard when it came to operating the temperamental army radios, from the 46, 77, c10s and the Singar sets, he could make them all work under difficult conditions. He worked on the switchboard in Connolly Bks for several years. He left the army in 1997, but always kept in touch with his friends and comrades in the Squadron, he was also a proud member of the Peter Keenan Branch of ONE. To his family, relatives and friends we offer our sincere sympathy. Rest in peace, old friend.
Some photos of his army service posted here.

CEREMONY IN BALLYGLASS CEMETERY MULLINGAR
A ceremony organized by ex-Sergeant Major Noel O Callaghan was held in Ballyglass Cemetery today, August 1st . In Noel’s words, “A short dignified ceremony in a manner befitting our service and professional training, in the best spirit of the Ethos & Values of our Defence Forces, to honour the service of 98337 Sgt Tom Masterson RIP”. Sgt Masterson who had served with the United Nations in the Congo, had passed away in 1975. Every detail of the ceremony was carried out with military precision. Brendan Rohan pictured in kilt, recited some beautiful poetry and Noel O Grady sang the hymns. Several others contributed to what was a beautiful and moving occasion, Paul Kiernan played the Last Post and Reveille. Noel’s wife and family provided the refreshments. Some of those from the Peter Keenan Branch, with some of our exers Brendan Rohan, and Ger Buckley, and Peter Philips, National Chairman of IUNVA, pictured. Thanks to Pat Grimes for the photos.

SAINT PATRICKS DAY 2026
The Peter Keenan Branch participated in five parades over this weekend, the first of our St Patricks Day Parades was held before a large attendance in Ballinamuck on Sunday. Despite the inclement weather it was a most enjoyable event and was much appreciated by the enthusiastic crowd who thronged the historic village. Liam Forde a member of the Peter Keenan Branch, led the parade. Great turnout for the Longford parade yesterday, our members got through it without the rain. Lanesboro and Ballymahon were not as lucky with the weather, but the heavy rain during both did not dampen the spirit of those that took part. Elphin the last of our events, was like the Longford parade a pleasant affair, with no rain Thanks to our members who turned out, your presence enhances those occasions, and is very much appreciated by everyone. Thanks to those who submitted photos from the different venues.
