“I can cope all day... but bedtime is when my mind won’t stop.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re far from the only one.

Many people find that the moment everything goes quiet, their thoughts get louder.

It doesn’t necessarily mean there’s something wrong with you.

One reason this can happen is that your brain stays on high alert, even when you’re finally safe enough to rest.

Swipe through if you’ve ever wondered why that happens.

Every so often, someone sits down in my therapy room and says something like:

“A friend gave me your number.”

Or…

“They said I should get in touch.”

Those conversations don’t happen by accident.

It means somebody listened to a friend who was struggling, thought of me, and felt comfortable enough to pass on my name.

For a therapist, that’s never something I take for granted.

If you’ve ever recommended my practice to someone you care about, thank you.

You may never know what happened after that conversation, but your recommendation might have been the reason they took that first step.

And sometimes, that’s all it takes.

If you’ve ever thought about starting therapy, you’ve probably had a few questions running around your head.

What if I don’t know what to say? What if I cry? Can I curse? What if it’s really awkward?

Trust me, you’re not the only one.

I hear these questions all the time, so I thought I’d answer a few of them here. Sometimes knowing what to expect can make taking that first step feel a little bit easier.

And if there’s something you’ve always wanted to ask but never have, send me a message or pop it in the comments. If you’re wondering it, chances are someone else is too.

Sometimes the people we care about are going through something we can’t fix.

Our instinct is often to make them feel better, but reassurance isn’t always what someone needs most.

More often than not, people remember how you made them feel. Feeling heard, understood and not alone can be far more powerful than finding the “right” words.

If someone in your life is struggling, this might be a reminder that simply listening, checking in and staying present can make more of a difference than you realise.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “Something has to change. I can’t keep going on like this.”

If you have, you’re not the only one.

The thing is, those thoughts rarely appear overnight. They usually build up over time.

You keep putting one foot in front of the other. You go to work. You look after everyone else. You tell yourself you’ll be grand, that things will settle down, or that you just need to get through this week.

But that feeling doesn’t always go away.

If you’ve found yourself thinking like this lately, it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. It might simply mean you’ve been carrying more than anyone should have to carry on their own.

You don’t have to wait until you’re at breaking point before asking for support. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is admit to yourself that something isn’t right.

If this resonated with you, I hope it reminds you that you don’t have to keep facing it alone.

Looking after my own mental health is something I have to make time for, just like anyone else.

For me, it’s usually the simple things. Getting outside. Time on the farm. Training. A coffee by the sea. Spending time with the people closest to me. My cat. Having something to look forward to.

None of those things solve everything, but they help me clear my head, keep things in perspective and cope a bit better when life gets busy.

We’re all different, so what works for me mightn’t work for you. The important thing is finding the things that help, and making time for them.

What’s one small thing that helps you switch off?
