And then someone else's words help us recognise something in ourselves.

Tonight I was reminded of the gift of poetry, as our book club came together for poetry month.

We can often be taken by surprise by our own anger. We lash out, like a bolt from the blue.
But there are usually early warning signs: the disappointment when somebody lets us down, the feeling of being taken for granted. We don't acknowledge these little hurts as they happen, and each one stacks on top of the last.
The good news is we can begin with a small irritation or annoyance, instead of our full-blown anger.
What small irritation, hurt or annoyance have you been brushing aside?

Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt the tension hanging in the air, even though everyone insists "everything is fine. The question is: What makes it so hard for us to simply own our anger and say, "I'm actually angry with you because..."

“When you put a lid on your anger, you put a lid on your happiness.”

A client said this to me when I was a young social worker. I didn’t understand it then, but over the years I’ve come to know that she was correct.

When we keep pushing an emotion down, we can miss the message it’s trying to give us. Learning to recognise it and express it safely takes practice—and it’s never too late to begin.

Work, rest and play—we need all three. But balance doesn’t look the same for everyone.

Some people thrive on a steady rhythm. Others work in bursts and then need longer periods of rest. And sometimes, caring responsibilities or changes in our health mean the balance we once had is no longer possible.

Anger can feel like the enemy—particularly when we have been on the receiving end of someone else’s anger.

But anger also carries a message. It may be telling us that something is wrong, a boundary has been crossed, or we have given away something important.

The challenge is learning to listen to its message and respond appropriately.
