🧊 Ice Baths: Useful or Overrated?

Ice baths have become a popular recovery tool among athletes, but are they really the secret to better performance?

The truth is it depends.

Cold water immersion can help reduce soreness and make you feel fresher after intense training or competition. However, it's not essential for everyone, and using it after every session may not always be the best choice, particularly if your goal is to maximise strength or muscle growth.

Like most recovery strategies, context matters. Your training goals, the type of exercise you've done, and when you use an ice bath all influence whether it's likely to be beneficial.

Check out the graphic to learn when ice baths may help, when they might not, and how to decide if they're right for you.

Remember, the foundations of recovery, good sleep, proper nutrition, hydration, and appropriate training loads, will always have the biggest impact on your performance.

If you're dealing with ongoing soreness or an injury that's affecting your training, HC Athletic Therapy can help you recover and get back to performing at your best.

🏃‍♀️ Thinking of starting Couch to 5K?

Taking the first step is something to be proud of. Whether your goal is to improve your fitness, boost your confidence, or complete your first 5K, building your running gradually is the key to long-term success.

Many new runners make a few common mistakes that can lead to unnecessary aches, pains, or injuries. We've highlighted some of the biggest ones in the graphic below so you can avoid them and enjoy your progress.

Remember, consistency beats intensity every time. Listen to your body, allow time for recovery, and don't be afraid to slow down when needed. The goal isn't just to finish the programme, it's to stay healthy enough to keep running long after it's over.

If pain or an injury is getting in the way of your training, HC Athletic Therapy can help assess the problem, support your recovery, and get you back on track safely.

❌ Myth: Running ruins your knees.

✅ Fact: For most people, recreational running does not damage healthy knees.

It's a common belief that running wears out your knees, but research suggests otherwise. In fact, regular running may help keep your joints healthy by strengthening the muscles that support them and encouraging healthy cartilage.

That doesn't mean everyone should ignore knee pain. Pain during or after running can be a sign that your training load, running technique, strength, or recovery needs attention, not that running itself is "bad" for your knees.

If you're new to running or returning after a break, build your mileage gradually, include strength training, and allow time for recovery.

Persistent knee pain shouldn't be ignored, but it also doesn't always mean you need to stop running. A proper assessment can help identify the cause and get you back to training safely.

If knee pain is limiting your running, HC Athletic Therapy can help with assessment, rehabilitation, and a plan to keep you moving.

🏃 Hamstring Strains: One of the Most Common Injuries in Sprint Sports

Whether you play GAA, soccer, rugby, or athletics, hamstring strains are among the most frequent injuries seen in sports that involve sprinting, rapid acceleration, and sudden changes of direction.

A hamstring strain can happen in an instant, but several factors may increase your risk, including:
🔹 Sudden increases in training load
🔹 Previous hamstring injuries
🔹 Fatigue
🔹 Inadequate strength or conditioning
🔹 Returning to sport too soon after an injury

The good news? Many hamstring injuries can be reduced with the right approach to strength training, sprint preparation, and gradual progression back to full-speed running.

If you've felt a sharp pain in the back of your thigh or you're struggling to get back to your previous level after a hamstring injury, don't ignore it. Early assessment and a structured rehabilitation programme can help reduce the risk of re-injury and get you back performing with confidence.

🌡️ Why Does Recovery Feel Harder in the Heat?

If your legs feel heavier, you're more fatigued than usual, or it takes longer to bounce back after training during warm weather, you're not imagining it.

Heat places extra stress on your body. As your core temperature rises, your heart works harder to cool you down, you lose more fluids and electrolytes through sweat, and recovery can take longer than it would in cooler conditions.

The good news is that you can still train effectively in the heat with a few simple adjustments. Check out the graphic for some of the key reasons recovery feels tougher and what you can do to help your body recover more efficiently.

Remember, recovery is part of your training. Looking after your hydration, nutrition, sleep, and recovery strategies will help you perform better and reduce your risk of injury.

If you're struggling with persistent muscle soreness, fatigue, or an injury that's affecting your training, HC Athletic Therapy is here to help.

💭 Fear of re-injury is real and completely normal

Returning to exercise after an injury isn’t just physical… it’s mental too.

Many people feel nervous about pushing themselves again, even when the body has healed. That fear can lead to holding back, moving differently, or avoiding certain exercises altogether.

At HC Athletic Therapy, we see this all the time and you’re not alone.

Fear of re-injury can:
• Reduce confidence in movement
• Cause stiffness and over-protection
• Lead to compensation patterns
• Increase the risk of new or recurring injuries

But here’s the key: fear doesn’t mean you’re not ready.
It just means your body and brain need to rebuild trust.

Through structured rehab, gradual loading, and the right guidance, you can regain confidence in your body and return to activity safely.

Recovery isn’t just about being pain-free, it’s about feeling confident again.

If you’re struggling to fully trust your body after injury, we’re here to help.

🦶 Achilles Tendinopathy: Don’t ignore that nagging tendon pain

Achilles pain that starts as stiffness or soreness can quickly turn into a long-term issue if left untreated. At HC Athletic Therapy, we regularly help runners, gym-goers, and active individuals manage and fully recover from Achilles tendinopathy.

The Achilles tendon takes huge load every day, especially during running, jumping, and walking. When the load becomes too much or increases too quickly, the tendon can become irritated and painful.

Common causes include:
🔹 Sudden increase in running or training
🔹 Tight calves or poor ankle mobility
🔹 Weak lower limb strength
🔹 Poor footwear or training surface changes
🔹 Returning to sport too quickly after time off

You may notice:
⚡ Morning stiffness in the Achilles
⚡ Pain at the back of the heel
⚡ Stiffness at the start of exercise that eases as you warm up
⚡ Pain after activity or the following day

Rest alone usually isn’t enough. Tendons need the right type of loading and rehab to properly recover.

At HC Athletic Therapy we focus on:
✔️ Reducing pain and irritation
✔️ Progressive strengthening programmes
✔️ Hands-on treatment
✔️ Return-to-running or sport planning
✔️ Preventing future flare-ups

The earlier you address Achilles pain, the easier it is to treat.

🏃‍♂️ Why do runners get hip pain?

Hip pain is one of the most common issues we see in runners at HC Athletic Therapy and it rarely starts at the hip itself.

Running is repetitive, and when there’s weakness, tightness, or poor movement mechanics, the hips often take on extra load. Over time, this can lead to irritation, strain, and ongoing discomfort.

Common causes of hip pain in runners:
🔹 Weak glutes causing overload on hip muscles
🔹 Tight hip flexors or IT band
🔹 Poor running mechanics
🔹 Sudden increases in mileage or intensity
🔹 Previous injuries causing compensation

You might notice:
⚡ Pain on the outside of the hip
⚡ Tightness during or after runs
⚡ Discomfort when lying on one side
⚡ Pain building with longer distances

Ignoring hip pain and “running through it” often leads to more serious injury and time off.

The good news? Most running-related hip pain responds really well to the right rehab.

At HC Athletic Therapy we focus on:
✔️ Identifying the root cause
✔️ Strength and stability work
✔️ Hands-on treatment
✔️ Gradual return-to-running plans

Don’t wait until you’re forced to stop running, deal with hip pain early and keep moving.

🦶 Plantar Fasciitis: Why that heel pain won’t go away

Waking up with sharp pain in your heel? Struggling to walk after sitting for a while? You could be dealing with plantar fasciitis, one of the most common foot injuries we treat at HC Athletic Therapy.

Plantar fasciitis happens when the band of tissue along the bottom of your foot becomes irritated and overloaded. It’s common in runners, walkers, people on their feet all day, and even those returning to exercise after a break.

Common symptoms include:
⚡ Sharp heel pain (especially in the morning)
⚡ Pain after rest or long periods sitting
⚡ Tight calves or foot arches
⚡ Discomfort during or after exercise

Ignoring it can lead to longer recovery times and ongoing pain but the right treatment can make a huge difference.

At HC Athletic Therapy we focus on:
✔️ Reducing pain and inflammation
✔️ Hands-on treatment
✔️ Rehab exercises for long-term relief
✔️ Identifying the root cause to prevent return

Don’t let heel pain become your new normal, early treatment leads to faster recovery.

💥 Why compensation can lead to reinjury 💥

At HC Athletic Therapy, we often see injuries that return again and again and compensation is usually the reason why.

When you’re injured, your body naturally tries to protect the painful area. You may walk differently, move differently, or avoid certain movements without even realising it. While this can reduce pain in the short term, it often puts extra stress on other muscles and joints.

Over time, these compensations can:
❌ Create muscle imbalances
❌ Place excess load on surrounding tissues
❌ Reduce proper movement patterns
❌ Increase the risk of reinjury

That small tweak or ongoing tightness you’re ignoring could actually be your body struggling to cope with compensation from an old injury.

✔️ Proper assessment
✔️ Targeted rehab
✔️ Correct movement retraining

These are key to fully recovering and preventing injuries from coming back.

If you’re dealing with recurring pain or a previous injury that never feels 100% right, it might be time to address the root cause.
