Shed 4 Bikers Toolbox Talks

Today we were delighted to welcome the incredibly knowledgeable and award-winning motorcycle instructor, Eric Dalton, from Dalton Motorcycle Training, who joined us to share his expertise on hazard perception, road positioning, braking techniques, grip/surfaces, and observation/blind spots etc

There was a huge amount of valuable information passed on throughout the session, and as always, the interaction and engagement from our members made the day even more enjoyable. Three young motorcyclists, all in their 20s, have lost their lives on our roads in the last 3 weeks.

It’s hard to put into words the sadness that comes with hearing these stories again and again. Behind every helmet is a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, a friend. People with futures, families, plans and lives ahead of them.

To the younger riders out there, please stay alert, and never think “it won’t happen to me.”
It only takes one second for everything to change forever.

Look after yourselves and look after each other on the roads. By all means enjoy the good weather, Enjoy the ride but..
Ride smart. Ride safe. Make it home

May the 3 young souls ride free

Update
Following our meeting with Minister Canney, our main objective and focus was to try to help reduce the number of motorcycle fatalities on our Roads, 29 lives lost in 2025, Nearly double than the previous year,

Our Aim was to highlight the importance of motorcycle personal protective equipment, and in the interest of safety, we put forward a motion to try to increase the safety standard by seeking a reduction in vat, this could have potentially made the wearing of PPE more affordable and attractive to motorcyclists in the hope that motorcyclists would be better protected in the event of accidents,

We tried but as you will read below until the EU Directive changes, this venture isn't possible,
We also highlighted the reduction in cost to the state due to medical and rehabilitation of the 150-200 motorcyclist injured which puts a massive strain on our HSE,
One Road, One Life, Too Many Lost

Unfortunately...
Our government is prohibited by EU regulations under Annex III of the EU Vat Directive.

Motorcycle personal protective equipment (PPE) including helmets, jackets, trousers, and boots is generally not included in the categories allowed for reduced VAT rates under Annex III of the EU VAT Directive (2006/112/EC).

Key Details regarding VAT on Motorcycle PPE:Standard Rate Applied: In most EU Member States, including Ireland, adult motorcycle clothing and protective gear are considered "adult clothing" or general consumer goods rather than essential medical or safety devices listed in Annex III, and are therefore subjected to the standard VAT rate.No Discretion for Lower Rates:

The EU Directive prohibits member states from applying reduced rates to adult clothing/PPE unless specifically listed in Annex III, which they are not.Historical Exceptions (UK Example): Some countries, such as the UK, were able to apply zero or reduced rates (e.g., on helmets) only if those specific items were already zero-rated at the time they joined the EU (1 January 1991), which does not apply to all member states.

Children’s Gear: Protective headwear for children can sometimes benefit from zero or reduced rates if it complies with relevant safety standards and is marketed for children.

Again we want to take this opportunity to Thank Minister Canney for taking the time to meet with us and to investigate possibilities

*** PRESS RELEASE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT ***

Following a radio interview on Rte’s morning Ireland late and the Kieran Cuddihy Newstalk program last year in relation to some issues encountered blood bikes were contacted by the Ministers office to discuss the matter after hearing the interview, Arising out of which a series of meetings ,discussions took place between blood bikes , the ministers office , department officials to work on the issue and related matters to ensure a practical solution.
The department officials fully took on board the issues and consulted with other agencies including an Garda Siochana and the road safety authority on a proposed plan and solutions.
Following a meeting yesterday in government buildings with the minister and staff at the department we received confirmation from the minister of the completed changes and that as of yesterday it was now officaly in place. We would like to thank the minister, his staff, department officials , various government ministers and state agencies who supported Blood Bikes on the issues.
This is the statement from the minister’s office in full following our meeting with the minister and department officials in the dail yesterday.

Ministers for Transport extends use of bus lanes to Blood Bike Medical Transport services
Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, and Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Seán Canney, have today granted approval to permit Blood Bikes Medical Transport to use the bus lane network while carrying out their vital services.
Blood Bike groups use vehicles to rapidly transport medical and clinical items to and from healthcare facilities.
This voluntary service reduces demand on alternative transport methods such as ambulances or private operators.
Today’s decision means that Blood Bikes can now use the bus lane network, enabling them to bypass traffic congestion and reduce transit times for collections and deliveries.
Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien, said:
“Blood Bikes Medical Transport volunteers provide a crucial health service, and I have had several meetings with Fergus and Michael to learn more about the work they do.
I am delighted that Blood Bike volunteers can now transport vital medical supplies between hospitals and patients across the country even more quickly and efficiently, which will bring reassurance to everyone involved.
I thank them all for their continued service to our communities.”
Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Seán Canney, said:
“I welcome today’s decision to allow access for Blood Bikes to bus lanes, further supporting them to carry out their indispensable support to our health service.
Blood Bike volunteers respond to almost thousands of calls each year and their work contributes to the health and wellbeing of countless patients and their families.
They also bring huge benefit to staff in our hospitals, medical centres, nursing homes and other healthcare settings. I too would like to take this opportunity to thank the Blood Bike volunteers for the work they do, free of charge, with great professionalism and unwavering dedication.
I had the privilege of meeting some of the volunteers in Galway last year and I am delighted to be able to assist in this very important work.”
