How is SIBO diagnosed?

The most common diagnostic method for SIBO is the hydrogen and methane breath test. This non-invasive test measures the levels of hydrogen and methane gases produced by bacteria in the small intestine after ingesting a sugar solution. Elevated levels of these gases can indicate bacterial overgrowth.

What types of SIBO exist?

There are three types of SIBO, based on the gases the bacteria produce:

Hydrogen-dominant SIBO – often causes diarrhoea
Methane-dominant SIBO (now known as IMO) – more likely to cause constipation
Hydrogen sulfide SIBO – often causes very foul-smelling gas and may present with both diarrhoea and constipation

When a bacterial overgrowth develops in the small intestine, the bacteria can break down food (most commonly carbohydrates) in this part of your digestive tract and interfere with the normal process of digestion. Gases such as hydrogen and methane are produced as well as other products. This may lead to gastrointestinal symptoms, impaired nutritional uptake, alteration in intestinal permeability, and/or immune activation.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when there is too much bacteria in the small intestine. The bacteria interfere with digestion and absorption and can result in digestive symptoms, malabsorption, and nutritient deficiencies.

The SIBO test can be done either in clinic or the test can be performed at home using a home testing kit.

The importance of a healthy intestine (gut) goes far beyond just digestion—it plays a central role in your overall health.

First, the intestine is responsible for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients your body needs, like vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins. If your gut isn’t functioning properly, even a perfect diet won’t nourish you effectively.

Second, a large part of your immune system is located in the gut. The intestines help defend your body against harmful bacteria, viruses, and toxins. A balanced gut microbiome (the community of good bacteria) strengthens immunity, while an unhealthy gut can make you more prone to infections and inflammation.

Your gut is also closely connected to your brain through what’s called the gut-brain axis. This means your intestinal health can affect your mood, stress levels, and even conditions like anxiety or depression. In fact, the gut produces many important neurotransmitters, including serotonin.

Another key role is maintaining proper digestion and preventing issues like bloating, constipation, or diarrhea. Long-term gut problems can contribute to conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
