We had a really inspiring and interesting inservice today with Mr Joseph Fournier, Spinal Consultant in Tallaght Hospital and The Dublin Midland Spinal Clinic.

Mr Fournier covered a huge volume of information, which will really help us in our management of Spinal Patients going forward.
We had some really interesting discussions;

The increased use of Robotics in theatre, and the pros and cons of this.

The rollout of day-case spinal surgeries and the indications for and logistics around this.

Spinal Injection, Rhizotomy & Stimulators - how they're done, why they're done, when are anaesthetics given, how many can one get?

Medications for pain relief, including narcotics, neural medications and anti inflammatories.

What a Spinal Surgeon wants in a Physiotherapist , and vice versa 😜 !

How a Team approach to managing Spinal Problems really helps outcomes.

We also had time for some case discussions .

Thank You so much to Mr Fournier for his time, it was a great afternoon.

A diagnosis of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis can be a bit scary. Often, it is made during a quick consultation, & the first thing people do is to go home and Google what it means.
Which can leave them feeling even more spooked.
Over the past couple of months, we've held a few workshops for local Women's Shed Groups. Listening to women's stories and experiences has made us realise that the management of these conditions is very variable, depending on who & where your care provider is. Some people get great advice and guidance, and others are left a bit confused about what to do.

Because Osteoporosis is a "silent" condition, usually without any symptoms until it's too late (ie you have a fracture), It's really important that people can advocate for themselves when it comes to their own management.

When to have a DEXA. When to repeat it. What medications to take. What exercises to avoid. What exercises to do- it's a lot for a person to get their head around.

A Chartered Physiotherapist with an interest in Osteoporosis is a really valuable person to have in your corner. To teach you about the condition & answer these questions.

The Royal Osteoporosis Society in the UK have some brilliant resources on their website, with the most up to date research.

Their 3 pillars of exercise prescription for people with Osteoporosis - "Strong, Steady & Straight"- guide our management plans here in Able Bodies. We match these principles with the individuals T-Score and fracture risk, and their baseline fitness level and lifestyle, to come up with a plan. The 3 physios in Able Bodies have trained in Pilates for Osteoporosis with the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute.

The worst thing people can do is become inactive because they're afraid to break a bone.

Have you had a diagnosis of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis? How has is changed your lifestyle? Do you have any advice for others with a diagnosis?

💫2026 Chartered- Physiotherapist Lead Pilates 💫

We run Pilates classes to make it easier to include Strength and Mobility work into your week, & make these exercises more accessible for people who may not want to,or be able to, attend a gym. Pilates is just one way to do it, and being under the care of a Chartered Physiotherapist is a great way to get back to exercise after injury or surgery or if you have a health condition.

We offer
Online Classes
or
Small group in Clinic (>5 people).

We tailor our Pilates classes for those Rehabilitating from Injury or Back Pain, or with health conditions. Correction and close monitoring during Online and in- person Classes by a Chartered Physiotherapist.

This year, we're delighted to be offering a new class- "Strong, Steady, Straight" for people with Osteoporosis and Osteopenia. All 3 of us physios completed the specialist training for this with the Australian Pilates Training Institute in December, & were really looking forward to launching this (much needed) service.
More details on this to follow!

6 week Term starts Monday 12th January
Investment: e110 for 6 weeks
Online Classes are x2 weekly,
In- Person Classes are 1 class weekly on Thurs or Fri

Wishing you all a Healthy, Happy 2026🤍✨️

2025 was full of the highest highs, and a few lows, for Able Bodies Physiotherapy. It was certainly busy!

My little man is almost 6 months old now & I'm really excited to get back to work seeing patients in mid - January. I know the juggle will be an adjustment for me and my boys for a while, but I love treating patients, & I really can't wait to get back to it.

We're finalising plans at the moment for our new Pilates Term, which will start the week of January 12th. Online and In- Person classes.

Myself, Susie and Rani all did the training for Pilates for Osteoporosis/Osteopenia in November/ December, so that's a service we can't wait to get going.Management of people with these conditions is often not great- so we're hoping to change that💪

We have lots of other things in the pipeline for Able Bodies too. Really looking forward to 2026🙂✨️
