As we approach the end of , we thought it natural to explain the WHY behind the HOW of Myopia Management. Myopia can progress rapidly in children, which may lead to high myopia. The younger a child becomes myopic, the faster it will progress . Each additional dioptre ( unit) of myopia is associated with an increased risk of eye conditions that can lead to visual impairment in later life. This is beause being myopic is usually associated with slight elongation of the eyeball. This small extra stretch can put pressure of the structure of the eye. And it's for THIS REASON we are passionate about spreading the word about Myopia Awareness and Management. We want to keep the eyes of our most special VIP patients as healthy as possible for as long as possible. There is a x10 greater risk of developing a vision impairment for a -8.00 D myope than a -4.00 D myope. So this Myopia Awareness Week, help us spread the word on how we can push out and slow down the development of Myopia. πŸ“£

Understanding how Myopia progresses in the eye has allowed huge insights into what we can change to positively impact your child's myopic journey. The most important step is to try and push out the onset of myopia as much as possible. We know that Mopia has the potential to progress faster in younger eyes and those at higher risk due to genetics and lifestyle factors. Following the "30 30 Out" or " 20 20 20 " rules can often help push out the age myopia starts at which correlates to a decreased risk of higher myopia when older. Once a child starts to show signs of myopia, the earlier along that journey we introduce management strategies such as the Stellest lenses from , the MiSight contact lenses from or Mylo contact lenses from , the greater the chance we have of slowing Myopia progression. These management strategies have shown that they can slow down myopia progression by up to 67% in some children. If you have any concerns about your child's vision or would like further information on the positive lifestyle changes that you and your family can make, please contact us to arrange an appointment with our Optometrists. #

A question we get asked often is "Why has my child become Myopic(short sighted)? The answer can be multifactorial. Genetics certainly plays a role and this is a risk factor we have known about. However, research in recent years has shown that lifestyle factors can have a significant impact on onset and progression of myopia. Prolonged near vision activities, increases use of digital devices, shorter reading distances as well as lack of time outdoors are all believed to negativity impact Myopia. We believe in a very simple little mantra " 30 30 out!" Children should be engaged in near activities at a distance of no closer than 30cm from the face, for no more that 30 min at a time before changing to a distance orientated task. The "Out" is for outside . Children should aim to have at least 15 hours of outside time per week to help vision develop at a more normal pace. If you have any concerns, our Optometrists would be delighted to speak with you and offer other helpful hints and tips. Call us today 0719170169

It's again so let's start by explaining what is. It's one of the most common visual conditions amongst children and according to the WHO, incidence is increasing. Myopia causes distance vision to become blurred which may manifest as children "squinting at the board" sitting too close to screens, complaining of headaches and rubbing their eyes. It may also show as a lack of interest in the classroom and errors when taking down notes from the school board . If you suspect your child may be showing some of these signs, its really important to act fast and book an eye examination as we now understand the condition much better and can offer advice and interventions to help slow its progression . Follow our posts and stories this week as help spread the message of this years Myopua Awareness Week.." Start early, protect vision for life" # myopiamanagement

Sun+heat= flowers+ grass cutting + pollen + hay-fever 😩. We understand how debilitating itchy, puffy, watery eyes can be and we want to help. Here are some non- medicated hints, tips and products that can help.
1. Wear sunglasses when out and about. These act as a barrier helping prevent allergens entering the eyes. They will also help with associated light sensitive, especially if your sunglasses are polarised 😎.
2. Tie loose hair back as your hair can also trap allergens contribute to the allergic load close to the eyes.
3. Change your pillowcase daily, again to decrease the chances of secondary exposure to allergens from your hair.
4. Keep a cool eye pack in the freezer. Applied to throbby inflamed eyes, the cool temperatures constrict blood flow to the eye lids thus slowing down your body's response to allergen exposure. It's your body's response that gives the uncomfortable symptoms. We have options in the practice from and and would be happy to advise.
5. Use a preservative free, non medicated eye drop or spray such as Thealoz duo or Zaspray. Often those of use prone to hay-fever are also more likely to be allergic to preservatives. Also, if we are likely to have to use a product for a prolonged period of weeks rather than days, preservative free is always recommended. Zaspray contains Hyaluronic Acid to help hydrate and lubricate your eyes as well as Perilla seed extract to help with the itch. Better still, you can spray it through closed eyelids!
6. Use preservative free, gentle lid cleansing wipes such as Blephaclean lid wipes from .ie. Mild enough to use from ages 3 months old, these help remove pollen trapped in your lashes. Used daily, they can be very effective at decreasing the allergen load in the ocular area.

We have lots of products in the practice to help keep you happy in the great outdoors this Summer. Our Optometrists would be happy to advise on what would suit you and your family best.
