On the 30th of July members of Sligo DPO attended the Sligo City Public Realm Enhancement Project. This was a public consultation on the upgrade of some of the streets in Sligo town. We had a very engaging discussion with Council staff and the project team where our members had the oppurtunity to ask questions and explain current issues with street for example footpaths, roads and so on. Thank you to our members firstly for attending and to Sligo County Council for their ongoing engagement with us . We look forward to continuing to work with the Council and seeing the outcome of the upgrades.

If you are disabled person in Sligo over the age of 16 and would like to find out more or join Sligo Disbaled Persons Organisation please email [email protected] or phone or message Aisling on 0870978534

*Your County, Your Safety*

Calling all Disabled People aged 12 years and over.

Please let us know what makes you feel safe or unsafe in County Sligo.

Remember that the Sligo County Council takes a social model approach to disability. The Survey itself wants to know about the different experiences we each have based on our impairments. Whether you have an official diagnosis or not, please choose the best fitting impairment label(s) for question 30 on the survey so that we can better understand the needs of our community.

Please either use the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SligoLCSP26

A huge thank you to everyone who joined the "From Script to Access: Disability Led Theatre Practice" session at SCRIPTS Ireland in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre over the weekend.

ILMI's Peter Kearns joined playwright Christian O'Reilly to share their experience of developing "No Magic Pill" and to explore disability led theatre practice, authentic representation and inclusive creative processes.

The session went very well, with great discussion and engagement throughout. Peter and Christian both really enjoyed the experience and were delighted to be part of the conversation.

Snap! Nice to see that Donegal DPO has also got a submission in on the new HIQA National Standards for Residential Services for Disabled People. Their points around DPO involvement also resound throughout our submission.

DPO membership is an important part of realising our rights as Disabled People. Under the UN Convention on our Rights, it is through our DPOs that we must be consulted.

The new National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People mandates that there should be DPO representation on the governance of Services.

A close relationship between DPOs and residential services would assist with implementing the human rights standards that this new strategy requires.

If you are a Disabled Person who lives in Sligo please get in touch. It is free to join Sligo DPO. [email protected]
